Wanna do ortho? GET THIS BOOK. Way, way better than Netter...

This is such a fantastic book as an introduction to the concepts of achieving good exposure in orthopedic surgery!

Of particular note to medical students about to start buying books for this fall's away rotations: I didn't, and I wouldn't, really fool much with Netter's Concise Orthopaedic Anatomy, 2e (Netter Basic Science), since the level of detail just doesn't compare. If you're gonna read about an exposure, you may as well do it right and read about it in Hoppenfeld. Throw down the coin, since--after all--you'd expect that you'll be needing this book for a few years to come anyway! Look at it as an investment in the Match! Read on for reasons why...

I write this as an about-to-start intern who used this book extensively on my third- and fourth-year orthopedics rotations during medical school, so it is mostly medical students who will find this review useful. This book almost definitely was over my head in large parts during my third year but started to click early in my fourth-year rotations after I had spent a good bit of time in the OR. I see residents referring to this book often, even the seniors sometimes, for a great broad overview of the "large menu of options" to "get to the bone and stay there", especially for fractures. Discussion of the rationale for particular approaches is somewhat limited (and is probably a discussion more suited to books written about particular injuries that would spark such a debate), but the "how-to" and the lending of understanding of the anatomy while in a particular approach is spectacular.

The artwork is truly great and gives a good sense of three-dimensional anatomy, via "overlaying" layers of tissue overtop the dissection plane of interest. This is definitely contributory towards relating surface anatomy and palpable landmarks to where you'll be on deeper planes, as well as "just how far away that posterior interosseous nerve is that you don't exactly wanna go looking for." The setup of the chapters is highly consistent, organized, intuitive, and excellent for the thought processes in starting a case and gaining exposure, starting with an overview in each chapter briefly comparing and contrasting the utility of each of the discussed approaches, and within each section starting with the incision, going through the internervous planes, superficial and deep dissection planes, and ending with "what to avoid". The pictures tend to be far more helpful and superior than what is usually in Rockwood and Green's much more prose-based descriptions of exposures specifically relevant to a particular fracture, and I would very highly recommend this book as a supplement to that, for understanding sake, as well as for "looking good in the OR" sake.

Many sections are included on "applied surgical anatomy" (a great place for third- and fourth-year medical students to start, reviewing the "just ortho-pertinent gross anatomy topics", if you will, and in a way that is highly applicable to the approaches).

Chapters are manageable length, and the pictures give a great conceptual basis for what you'll see in the OR. Very possible and also absolutely critical to read these chapters the night before a case (and Handbook of Fractures or, if there's time, Rockwood and Green), before getting pimped by trauma attendings. Knowing as much as possible of the contents of Hoppenfeld made an excellent impression on my rotations. Pretty reasonable to "get surprised" in the AM by the post-call admitting resident presenting an operative fracture/patient you didn't know about last night, and "hurry up and read about this exposure real quick before the case starts" on my iPad, too, which was a bonus.

Regarding pictures, indeed, intraoperative photos are notably absent from this book (unlike C. Jordan's "Atlas of Orthopaedic Exposures", which is based exclusively on photographic images, albeit in cadavers which make things uncharacteristically easy to visualize). However, I refer much more often to Hoppenfeld than to Jordan's book, which I also own, since Jordan's book lacks some of the conceptual and functional explanations of the anatomy. Jordan's book, like Hoppenfeld, is written from a highly practical perspective, and I like that part of both of these books. Both contain an element of "how to stay out of trouble", which is all so critical in surgical fields. Another point of comparison is that Hoppenfeld's kindle edition is much more viewer-friendly than Jordan's book, which did not translate well at all from print to kindle edition. The Hoppenfeld kindle edition is overall better (albeit not perfect, since there is still some flipping back and forth from images to captions).

I have thumbed through older editions of Hoppenfeld that did not include full-color, and I think that this new edition is a full order of magnitude better. Indeed two-tone black-and-white in older editions may have been good conceptually, but it is nice to have something that registers better visually in your brain when you're just trying to memorize the images... Worth every penny for the new edition.

One caveat to note is that Hoppenfeld, while very broad in scope, is not 100% all-inclusive. Perhaps nor should it be... There are a couple of exposures in Jordan's book that aren't very well detailed in Hoppenfeld, but I'd say Hoppenfeld outnumbers Jordan in terms of the overall completeness. I would recommend looking at the table of contents via the kindle sample to get an idea of what all is included. Reading the first chapter via kindle is pretty representative of the rest of the book's content. Hoppenfeld also has a couple sections on hip and knee arthroscopy for very basic principles and where to put ports, which is very helpful for medical students and perhaps very junior residents. Importantly, this obviated the need for me to get an additional esoteric book on arthroscopy just to know what was going on anatomically on the monitor. Obviously, readers would do better with other books for more advanced arthroscopic anatomy later in residency(my sports experience is also limited, aside from thumbing through Stephen Burkhart's fantastic technical manuals shoulders--The Cowboy's Companion: A Trail Guide for the Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgeon and the newer Burkhart's View of the Shoulder: A Cowboy's Guide to Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy) but Hoppenfeld was notably great for my foot & ankle rotations. Definitely a semi-dizzying array of different approaches in the foot and ankle depending on the structure of interest, and most are covered superbly.

I cannot compare this book to the Master series book on orthopedic exposures Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery: Relevant Surgical Exposures, nor to Mark Miller's book on exposures Orthopaedic Surgical Approaches, 1e . Fellows would almost certainly be familiar with Hoppenfeld's atlas and would know the following information, but I'll state it: that more specialized topics as far as surgical exposure may be better covered in other books, namely in hand surgery with Schmidt's Surgical Anatomy of the Hand, Doyle's 2002 book (http://www.amazon.com/Surgical-Anatomy-Hand-Upper-Extremity/dp/0397517254/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2BRCVY7BFOBCH&coliid=I3MF5P2VUYPH7B), and the classic from 1984 Kaplan's Functional and Surgical Anatomy of the Hand. I am less familiar with these books, since I spent very minimal time during my rotations doing hand surgery.

As a bottom line, if you want to do well both for your understanding and looking good during medical school rotations, as well as get a book you'll refer back to again and again prepping for the early years in the OR, get this book. It is worth every penny, and I have it both in hard copy for making drawings on pictures as well as on kindle for quick reference at the hospital. Get this book, and get Handbook of Fractures. Two absolutely fundamental bodies of knowledge with which to be familiar as a burgeoning almost-orthopod.

Best in Class!

Certainly iconic, probably legendary! I used the first edition extensively during medical school and residency. Now, recently updating my library, I got the updated 4th edition -- still top shelf, even better than its predecessors!!

This is by far (as most of the reviewers would concur) the quintessential work for learning operative exposure for surgery of the extremities and spine. For all orthopaedic, plastic surgery and neurosurgery residents, don't even think of starting without a copy! For medical students interested in any of these specialties, save some money, get a loan -- get Hoppenfeld! An absolutely amazing investment -- reads very easily as well!

Phenomenal for med students

This is a terrific resource for me as a med student. As I have been told by many others ahead of me, this is an essential resource. I have the text book, too, but the Kindle version is a blessing, as I can always have it with me. I always use this to review approaches the night before, the morning of, and in between, cases. It has been worth it's weight in gold to me.

A Wonderful and Profound True Story

Wow! I actually cried while reading a comic book. This book was my first exposure to Saint Teresa of Avila, and it has inspired me to learn even more about her and perhaps be more like her. I feel as though God used this book (and I never read comics) to help me draw closer to Saint Teresa and learn from her devotion to our Lord.

This is a full color good-sized book, and it is beautifully illustrated. The writing flows perfectly and it's an exciting and interesting read. Just the sheer drama of the story is enough to engage the reader, let alone it's true and wonderful tale. I think the writer and illustrator, Yoon Song-i, is very talented, and I am little jealous of her accomplishment. May God grant her the grace, ability, and courage to do more of these wonderful books.

BTW: The historical side notes were very helpful and contributed to a better understanding of the story.

Shoujo-style book on St. Teresa of Avila

Saint Teresa of Avila: God's Troublemaker is a children's book in the Shoujo-style. This means that is is aimed at girls and focuses more on emotions and relationships. Some popular Japanese series from this genre include Boys Over Flowers, Fruits Basket, and Sailor Moon. As a male, I have no familiarity with the titles, I just obtained them from research, so someone more familiar with them can tell me if the artwork is similar. Like the book Philip Neri: The Laughing Saint, this one is read left to right and not right to left in traditional Japanese manga. The art seems very flowery and places a great focus on light.

The story is divided into five chapters and begins with Teresa at an early age dealing with the reality of her mother dying. Her father and sister believe she is acting out, looking to be the center of attention, so they come to the conclusion that they should send her to study at a convent. Through the rest of the chapters, we see Teresa's struggle to mature and focus on others and not herself. We also see glimpses of the visions she received while in the convent, and the impact that she had on everyone around her. The book closes with information on her canonization and personal words found in her notebook. This manga is unique, which is good and bad. It will definitely appeal to fans of St. Teresa, but I wonder how successful this style will be among girls, because there are very few girls I know that read manga. Hopefully, I'm wrong and it's wildly successful!

My daughter's friend loaned her this book. They are 9 and 10 years old in the fourth grade. My daughter read it in a day and told me she cried in some parts. In all she loved the book and would recommend it highly to her friends! We are looking at ordering more of these graphic novels!

After three of his novels became motion pictures scripted by other writers (The World According to Garp, Hotel New Hampshire and A Prayer for Owen Meany, which was rechristened on screen as Simon Birch), and two of his own screenplays languished unproduced, Irving finally got his chance to adapt one of his novels to film. The focus of this slim, eloquent memoir is Irving's 13-year struggle to bring The Cider House Rules to the big screen, and its passage through the hands of various producers, four different directors and numerous rewrites. Backtracking to illuminate the origin of the novel's pro-abortion stance, Irving introduces readers to his grandfather, an obstetrician and gynecologist, and to the history of abortion. (Abortions didn't become illegal throughout the U.S. until 1846, when physicians sought to take the procedureAand financial rewardsAout of the hands of midwives, Irving reveals.) He also offers a fascinating and detailed look at how he trimmed his huge novel into a workable screenplay. Although he professes to love the final product, Irving details each scene and line that was cut as the film was edited down to two hours. While he claims to be pleased with the screen treatments of his previous novels, he is disappointingly silent on the subject of Simon Birch (he refused the filmmakers the use of the protagonist's name and also insisted that the screen credit state that the film was "Suggested by the novel"). 32 pages of photographs. A Good Book, But Will Appeal to a Select Audience

Not everyone will be interested to read this book. If you are a fan of John Irving, however, or interested in the process of adapting a film from a novel, you'll find this a quick, fun read, and informative to some extent. What I found most interesting was Mr. Irving's views on adaptation and the glimpses on how those views changed over the years. Most authors and readers presume that the only good adaptation is one literal to the book. Mr. Irving shows why that isn't the case, and he does so by relating his own experiences as author and screenwriter. Most of the book is about the upcoming Cider House Rules; I would have liked to have read more about the previous films adapted from other novels. Nevertheless, as a novelist's honest assessment of adaptation, it is an unusual and valuable document.

"a hair-raising revelation..."

It only took John Irving ("A Widow For One Year," "A Son of the Circus") thirty years to break into the movie business. His first attempt cam in 1968, when he was hired to draft a screenplay for his first novel, "Setting Free the Bears." Since that time, Irving has seen three of his novels turned into films, written one original (but, as of yet, unproduced screenplay) and spent thirteen years shepherding his screenplay of "The Cider House Rules" onto the Silver Screen. "My Movie Business" is a record of all that, and more. Because "The Cider House Rules" (screenplay and novel) relies on the subject of abortion as a central issue, Irving starts his memoir by telling us about his grandfather, Dr. Frederick C. Irving. Not only was Dr. Irving chief of staff at Boston Lying-In (one of the world's leading obstetrical hospitals in the early 1900's), he was a writer who cobbled up numerous limericks (many of which live on through medical students) and published three books. Irving's quotes from his grandfather's reveal a "Victorian prose" style that (along with the novels of Charles Dickens) belie an early influence. In writing about grandfather, Irving succinctly sums up his own creed as a novelist: "Grandfather was a man of extreme erudition and unaccountable, even inspired, bad taste; as such, he would have been a terrific novelist, for a good novel is at once sophisticated in its understanding of human behavior and utterly rebellious in its response to the conventions of good taste." Irving uses most of the first nine chapters to educate the reader on the history of abortions in America, detailing his grandfather's personal involvement as well. The author even goes so far as to take a stand on the Right-to-Life movement: "Let doctors practice medicine. Let religious zealots practice their religion, but let them keep their religion to themselves." From there, the author delves into the business of drafting screenplays for Hollywood. It is, Irving realizes, a business of compromise. During the course of developing the film and writing the screenplay, Irving works with no less than four directors (the last one, Lasse Halstrom, saw the film to completion). And in order to make more room for the relationship between Dr. Larch and Homer Wells, Irving has to excise at least one major character and lose all of Homer's history as an orphan. Forced to cut more portions of the film (to make it more stream-lined), he finds that all attempts at humor are excised. As Irving writes, "...these scenes were a comic interlude that would have...reminded my readers of the tone of my novels." In typical Irving fashion, there are digressions, albeit interesting ones. Such as the story about his relationship with Irving Kirshner, who was to direct "Setting Free the Bears"; or that Paul Newman was approached to play Dr. Larch, but was uncomfortable with scenes involving an incinerator; and Irving includes his feelings about the films of his novels "The World According to Garp" and "The Hotel New Hampshire." (The only noticeable exclusion is any mention of "Simon Birch," the Disney version of "A Prayer for Owen Meany," from which Irving disassociated himself). Insightful and informative, "My Movie Business" is a candid glimpse into the film-making process and a hair-raising revelation of how art must always battle commerce in the bottom-line land of Hollywood. Insightful and Fun

I loved this book. I am, admittedly, an avid John Irving fan, and to finally have a book not only by, but about him was thrilling. It is so nice to finally get a glimpse of the man behind the novels. What an interesting person! He is witty, intelligent, and engaging. The only thing I regret is that he included only two stanzas of his grandfather's infamous poem. I am very eager to read it in it's entirety. Hopefully, Mr. Irving will include it in a future book. This memoir, while short, was very informative, and even persuaded me to consider seeing the movie. In general I refuse to see movies that are based on novels, especially if they are novels I enjoyed. However, since Irving explains his motives for cutting out certain characters, as well as the other changes he made to the plot, I am prepared for an equally beautiful, if different, story. Overall, I enjoyed every aspect of this book, from the history of abortion in the United States to the digressions about other novels of his. A fine book, and a fascinating person! Highly recommended.

Excellent Introduction to Tien Shen Pai (Celestial Mountain) Kung Fu

Willy Lin was a student and teaching assistant in Taiwan to respected teacher WANG Jyne-jen, beginning his studies in 1959. Teacher Wang was the recognized sole inheritor of T'ien Shan P'ai, also known as Celestial Mountain Gung-Fu. Wang was also one of the Chinese Martial Arts Masters who fled during the tumultuous period of communism's implementation, bringing T'ien Shan P'ai with him and helping to make Taiwan an Oasis of traditional Chinese martial arts while teachers on the mainland were imprisoned and persecuted.

This book provides an excellent overview of the history and techniques of this system, including portions devoted to wrestling and the first basic form (as Lin points out basic in this case does NOT mean easy!). Includes a very good introduction to Chin-na, a specific subset on which Lin has written two other books.

Only disappointment was we did not receive the rounded corner version pictured! It's a smaller squared off paperback by scholastic that does not match our other two books in the series. Oh, well. The story is fun.

Once rearranged to suit English sensibilities, though, those symbols lose their power, meaning, and coherence.

One of the Best Criticisms of Tolkien I Have Ever Read

In twenty some pages E. Michael Jones explicates some of the "failures" almost every reader of Tolkien feels upon reading Tolkien. To me, there was always the feeling, "Yeah, there's something great about this work, but.....am I missing something?" Yes, it turns out I was missing something big time. Jone's contends that Tolkien sought to reset his beloved "Northern Thing" in England to rescue it from the tainted embrace of Wagner. Wagner mined the Northern Thing for his own Ring Trilogy, Wagner was later a darling of the Nazis, Wagner thus tainted the Northern Thing with Antisemitism. Tolkien sought to remove this taint of racism from the Northern Thing by resetting it in England and retelling the mythos. Simultaneously, he would be gifting his beloved England with its' own foundation myth.

Jones argues that in resetting and retelling the Wagnerian mythos in England Tolkien stripped the story of its' deeper meaning. I would (and do) disagree, but the points he makes are cogent and thought provoking. Given the truncated nature of this "book" the insights are arguments contained within outshine (IMHO) volumes written by others. A truly groundbreaking work that led to me returning to reading Tolkien and developing a much deeper appreciation for all of Tolkien's work.

Much as you'd expect from yet another 'voice of the oppressed'

Not sure it matters that the author seems to understand very little about Tolkien when you consider the predictable anti-English tone of his pronouncements elsewhere and the meaningless phrases attributed to him such as 'ethnic Catholics'. Language-abuse is common among Irish-wordshipping American authors and assigning all the ills of the world to 'WASPS' no less so. Serious students of Tolkien or Wagner [axe-grinders excepted] are warned they will find little to interest them here. Do not confuse understanding the Ring with talking through it.
