A crisis for Italy's new republic

I am always on the lookout for books about Naples. This is by far the best book I have read on this city. There are many books on prewar Italy, both WWI and WWII, but they are largely in Italian. For those who are limited to English, I cannot see how such a reader would be disappointed by this book. I find Thomas Snowden to be an excellent writer who is never boring. Perhaps I enjoyed this book because of my interest in the subject. However, I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Italy. What I found most interesting was Snowden's analysis of the local politics of Naples and the national politics of Rome. I was shocked at the misery of Naples and the indifference towards it of the upper class Catholics until an epidemic occurred. When you read Snowden's descriptions of the attitudes of the Naples elite towards the poor, it is easy to see how the rebuilding of Naples became a huge failure. Snowden shows how the problems with Naples are not all due to the North. The municipal government of Naples was solely responsible for the failure in the rebuilding of Naples. Snowden shows how the illegality of Italy's Prime Minister in 1911 weakened democracy and began a trend that continued through to Mussolini's march on Rome in 1922.

Great book in the history of epidemics.

Bought it for an online class, and consumed it in two sittings! Could not put it down. Its a story of politics and economics in the US and Italy, and how various interest groups conspired to hide a major cholera outbreak! Most of us know the stories of the great plague, of syphilis in the age of discovery and in the Victorian era, and the spread of small pox. However, the horrors of cholera as a major European epidemic have remained obscure, possibly because of the our cultural association of diarrheal diseases with filth. This book takes a hard look at the impact and politics of a key outbreak, and how close the United States came to experiencing its transfer.

Despite insisting that he was apolitical, he ultimately took sides in the Spanish Civil War. All his life, his rigorous brand of Roman Catholicism brought him both solace and agony in his quest for spiritual and artistic perfection.

In Sacred Passions: The Life and Music of Manuel de Falla, Carol Hess explores these contradictions and offers a fresh understanding of the life and work of Manuel de Falla. Building on over a decade of research on Spanish music, Hess examines his work in terms of musical style and explores the cultural milieu in which he worked. Biographical, historiographical, and cultural threads are explored against the compelling backdrop of early twentieth-century Spain, where Falla was a pivotal figure in a group that included not only his Spanish contemporary Enrique Granados, but also composers Dukas, Stravinsky, Ravel, and the group known as les Apaches, and many other artists and writers. During this remarkable cultural renaissance known as the "Silver Age," Lorca, Buñuel, Dalí, Unamuno--and de Falla--created some of their greatest works.

Hess explores a number of myths in earlier biographies, including his life as an ascetic saint, his supposed misogynistic tendencies, and the accusations of homosexuality. She also offers a balanced view of his behavior during the Spanish Civil War, a wrenching event for a Spaniard of his generation and which Falla biographers have left largely unexamined. Hess also examines the notion of de Falla as merely a high-class pop composer, the quintessentially Spanish composer of colorful and exotic dances from The Three-Cornered Hat and El amor brujo. She incorporates recent research on de Falla, draws upon untapped sources in the Falla archives, and reevaluates de Falla's work in terms of current issues in musicology.

Ultimately, Hess places de Falla's appealing music, which straddles popular and serious idioms, securely among the best of his better-known European contemporaries. What emerges is a portrait of a man whose lofty spiritual values inspired singular musical utterances but were often at odds with the decidedly imperfect wrold he inhabited.

A must-have for any aromatherapy student.

This is a well written and comprehensive book on the safety of essential oils for all practitioners. It offers refreshing data based on scientific information, rather than hand-me-down misconceptions redelivered over and over in numerous other texts. The only down-side is that it was written 15yrs ago and while the information is not "out" dated, there needs to be an "updated" version to carry on where this left off. Still a worthy investment.

Safety has to underpin good practice

Any aromatherapist must of course make certain that safe practice is the foundation for her/his work. Though this book is now quite old, it still fills a gap in the market, and is, to my knowledge the only reasonably priced book which focuses only on safety - contraindications and cautions for conditions and specific client groups, specific oils and specific chemical constituents within specific oils.

It is certainly one of the most well thumbed books on my groaning aromatherapy shelf, the first one I turn to when working with clients presenting with health issues which I suspect have led to compromise in the actions of liver, kidneys, the skin itself, or are on prescription medication which may affect the safe choice of specific oils. Nor would i add a new oil to my extensive kit before starting my research into it via the EOS book

The elderly date of last revision of the book, and the absence of a body of information about recent positive research studies prohibit the final 5th star; however I can't afford Bob Harris's EORC database (several hundred pounds)

Until Robert brings out a revised version (I believe this has been planned for MANY years) my battered EOS will continue to suffer the wear and tear of constant handling

Is Holmes truly as mean spirited to Watson as he seems?

Even though I encourage self published books, I still find it disheartening when their editors miss spelling and puntuation errors. The story was a different twist on the Speckled Band affair and even though it was quite plausible in the world of SH, I found it a little too dependent on Watson's appreciation of the fairer sex to make Holmes' point. I don't know, maybe I just don't like it when Watson is played for as the fool.
