This book is fabulous! In addition to giving you every possible detail about how to use a pressure cooker, it has so many mouthwatering recipes I hardly know where to begin! No, I do know--Greengrocer's Chili, a veggie chili that will be a go-to cold weather meal. And there are so many other great recipes, many for things you never knew you could cook in a pressure cooker. Don't worry, if pressure cookers aren't your thing, you can always make these recipes in your everyday pots and pans and just cook a little longer--easily adaptable!

Love it!

This book just arrived today and I've not had opportunity to cook from it yet. However, as a fan of Hensperger's prior work I can say this book doesn't disappoint. One whole section just devoted to chili! Lots of great ideas for flavorful soups and broths. The dessert section is so-so (no biggie to me since I'm not a big dessert person) but the rest of the book is packed full of information, details, new recipes and variations of favorites. I'll update after having a chance to actually make something. But from my hands on experience so far with using a pressure cooker, this book is right on.

So far, I'm really impressed with this book. I got a pressure cooker for xmas this year and have taken a number of PC cookbooks out of the library. This one is really comprehensive and has many many useful recipes. I think it'll be the "go-to reference" for pressure cooker cooks! I'm 150% happy with this purchase.

Fresh and Sexy

I was pleasantly surprised by the ability of the author to write so vividly and interestingly in so many short stories. Who needs 50 shades when you can turn red faced reading about the escapades of these individuals. Each story was an enticing journey of its own and I'd love to see these short stories turned into cable television episodes. This is a great first work for the genre and I look forward to reading any future installments.

the art of romance

Although I am not an avid romance reader, I was so intrigued with this collection of short stories. The descriptions were so vivid and realistic that I have to admit, some of the stories did raise my temperature a bit. What I really liked about these stories is that they put me back in touch with my own femininity. It showed me that there is an art to romance just waiting to be expressed by us all.

I could go on and on about what I loved while reading The Lipstick Gospel, but for the sake of time, I’ll get right down to it. Stephanie writes with such raw honesty, saying things that not many Christian writers would dare to say but I often wish they would. It was written with beautiful imagery, making me feel like I was experience her travels abroad right along with her. And most of all, her story has stuck with me. It serves as a great reminder to me that God continually covers me with His grace, kindness and mercy. Her testimony shows how much of an influence you can have on your friends; how the life you lead and the words you speak can powerfully affect how other’s view God. And her story speaks volumes to the kind of life you can have in Christ. Not a boring, vanilla-type life, but a fun, adventurous and exciting life- way more than you could ever imagine! I definitely recommend this book.

As an avid adventurer, the words on the pages of The Lipstick Gospel spoke to the deepest parts of my sojourning heart. Stephanie has a way of bringing you into her story with such hospitality; it's like she handed me a fresh cappuccino and comfy {stylish} walking shoes of my own, inviting me on the journey with her. We all want stories we can relate to and find respite in, the ability to shout "ME TOO!" as we read. This story, a true and vulnerable depiction of meeting God in the most unlikely of places, will enable you to do just that. Steph shares from the deepest places of longing, brokenness, healing, and redemption, and gently reminds us those are the very places God wants to meet each of us, too. I can't wait to gift this book to some dear friends who are on their own painful and beautiful pilgrimages.

A Story of Finding God and yourself, when you're looking for more.

I feel like Stephanie wrote my life and my college years down on paper better than I ever could. One of my favorite quotes is from the book Their Eyes Were Watching God: "There are two things everybody has to do for themselves: They got to go to God and they got to find out about living for themselves." Stephanie beautifully takes us on her journey of doing both. She describes how diverse God and His love can be and how its not all cookie cutter and breaks the barriers of every-day-traditional-religion. Her words made my heart palpitate for a journey and an adventure as well as reassuring me that my thoughts on Christianity, the way I love God and see Him, the way I live my life--is beautiful and wonderful and God designed. She encouraged me to do those two things: Find God for myself and figure out how to live for myself. This book was a sweet gift from a friend for Christmas. I will cherish it and pass it along to so many other women that I know. Thank you Stephanie for sharing your journey and tasking us all to live the Lipstick Gospel.

En esta novela Icaza nos presenta a un blanco ecuatoriano, Don Alfonso Pereira. Don Alfonso Pereira abusa de los indios que le pertenecen a el. El viola a una india, flagela a un indio, deja morir a niños, ancianos y todos los otros indios que el considera basura humana. La novela se trata sobre dos problemas: las deudas de Don Alfonso Pereira y el embarazo de su hija por un cholo cuyo apellido es Cumba. Su tio le ha dicho que un gringo llamado Mr. Chapy quiere comenzar una empresa con el porque en los bosques de su hacienda hay muchas maderas de exportación, y tambien porque en esas mismas tierras hay petroleo. Don Alfonso Pereira decide firmar papeles con los gringos y va a su hacienda en Tomachi para solucionar sus dos problemas (los de la deuda y el embrazo de su hija). Una de las cosas que los gringos le piden a Don Alfonso Pereira es que elimine a los huasipungos de los indios que quedan en las laderas para poder construir allí casas para ellos mismos. Un huasipungo es el padeso de tierra que un patron le da a sus indios por el trabajo que ellos hacen en su hacienda. Cuando los indios se enteran de lo que Don Alfonso piensa hacer, ellos se vuelven locos y allí es que comienza toda la tragedia.
Los verdaderos protagonistas de Huasipungo son los indios. Jorge Icaza fue inspirado a escribir esta novela por sus propias experiencias con el indio del Ecuador. A la edad de 9 su mama y el fueron a vivir en la hacienda de su tio maternal Enrique el cual fue muy parecido a Don Alfonso Pereira, pues el tambien abusaba de sus indios. Huasipungo es un testamento sobre lo bueno y lo malo, sobre existencia y aniquilación, sobre guerra y paz, sobre fe y escepticismo, y sobre amor y odio.
Huasipungo a sido trasladada al inglés, italiano, francés, alemán, portugués, sueco, checo, polaco y ruso, etc. Huasipungo es una novela clásica universal. Antes de Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, y Julio Cortázar existio Jorge Icaza. El fue el primer escritor cuya fama llego internacional antes del `realismo mágico.' Todos los escritores de America Latina le deben homenaje a Jorge Icaza -- el padre de la literatura hispana.

cruel depiction of Latin American misery

Because of the horrible situation in Latin-American countries during the twentieth century, the majority of the writers could not choose the l'art pour l'art stance. The bulk of the literature at that age was protest literature, released not to last for centuries but to open the eyes of the public of what is going on the countries. The majority of the authors that lasted from this period and became extremely popular all over the world like García Marquez or Vargas Llosa had books that contained original experiments with the form of the novel, but they also unveiled to the world the situation the continent is in. Icaza's Huasipongo maybe is the best example to the protest literature without any major aim to be everlasting. It was written to show how the Indians were exploited by the American capitalists, and in its form it is similar to a lurid recollection of newspaper reports. The author stays outside the events, and documents with a dour, gelid voice the misery of the Indians and of everyone who lives in the region. What is more upsetting in the novel that the novel does not skip on the details and gives a precise description of a suppurating leg or the hunger of the Indians who resent to dig out carcasses to eat something. These details can make the reader wonder whether the writer chose to infuriate them or he revels in describing these nauseating events. Sometimes I had the feeling as if I was watching Bunuel's Las Hurdes, I did not know whether the writer was pulling my leg or not. Thus, instead of opening the eyes to the situation, the book was similar to a snuff movie, made to audience that has a perverted joy in knowing how miserable the world is, though nevertheless it also very absorbing.

About the Author
Mercer Mayer is the writer and illustrator for Little Monster(R) and Little Critter(R) books. He began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966 and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Mayer currently lives in New England with his wife Gina, who co-wrote many of the popular Little Critter(R) books. He has four children and two grandchildren.

Teaching Forgiveness

Little Critter is one of those characters I remember from my childhood. His surly attitude is always changed by the end of his books. I was excited to share Little Critter with my son. In We All Need Forgiveness, he is having one of those days when things just aren't going his way. Everyone around him, including the family pets, seems to be contributing to his bad day by ruining his toy or making him drop his cookie. By the end Little Critter realizes sometimes he needs forgiveness too and that it's important to forgive others quickly. I love the moral of this book. I do wish there had been a moment when Little Critter told his friends and family he forgave them rather than just accepting their forgiveness. Overall though the story is sound and one that my son enjoyed. It's hard not to love all the detailed illustrations and fun expressions of Little Critter!

Forgiveness is given and received.

Recently, we took our normal trip to vision therapy for my two youngest children. My nephew Jaylin was along for the day, which meant he and I had an hour to spend entertaining ourselves during their sessions. Before leaving the house, I packed some of August's Tommy Mommy books and a few snacks in a bag just for 5-year-old Jaylin. In "We All Need Forgiveness" by Mercer Mayer, one of my favorite authors, Jaylin learned so much about the relationship between receiving and giving forgiveness; friendship, and just how quickly we should forgive one another.

He really liked this book. Although he needed help with words, he understood all of the concepts and practiced them right away. He delivered them in his own perception, explaining them to his big cousin much later the same day, and the lesson stuck with him.

This is what I call an effective tool for teaching God's rules for living a right standing life, and that right early.

Forgiveness is something that we all expect when we do something wrong, whether intentionally or not. But forgiving someone else when they have done something to us is not so easy. As adults, and especially Christians, we know that we are required to forgive. Colossians 3:13 says, "Forgive each other because the Lord forgave you."

Little Critter is all out of sorts because his friends and even some of his family have done things that have made him downright mad. The last thing he wants to do is forgive them. But of course the tables are eventually turned and he is in need of forgiveness. Things definitely look different from that perspective.

Mercer Mayer has once again used the delightful animals in his Little Critter's series to help you teach your child a valuable life lesson. Come along with Little Critter and his friends as they explore giving and receiving forgiveness. The book is a great jumping off point for discussions on why we should forgive and how we should go about seeking forgiveness.

A Must Read for Anyone Before Spine Surgery

In full disclosure, I am Sandra's daughter and one of her caretakers during her surgery recovery. Becasue I was there and participating in many of the activities she describes, I believe I am able to provide an unbiased account of the book and it's relevance to you.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST-READ FOR ANYONE WHO IS GOING TO HAVE SPINE SURGERY. While Sandra's surgeon and care team did their jobs in providing her (and us) with instructions and expectations as they see them from their clinical view, I know of no other guide out there that provides fundamental guidelines and solutions to ALL aspects of the recovery process.

My mom and dad worked hard and smart before her surgery to anticipate what she would need at home for the best recovery possible, and that pre-planning was key - not only in ensuring that future surprises were limited, but also in reducing the stress associated with the unknown. Not only does this book provide practical advise and solutions to the things that most patients already think of (managing stairs, getting in and out of cars), it also provides insight and approaches to things you may not of thought of (grabbing things, having key items handy but not in the way, effectively dressing and undressing), as well as things that are maybe uncomfortable to think of and talk about (showering help, using the bathroom, staying ultra-clean, unanticipated side effects of medications).

It is so hard to anticipate what you are going to experience and what is going to challenge you - both physically and mentally - following spine surgery. And I believe that lack of information can increase stress and fear, which in turn can decrease the effectiveness of the healing process. As a caretaker, knowing that Sandra had thought through so many things was extremely helpful to me; I was better able to help her when I had clear guidelines. And the things she was able to (and wanted to) do herself still amaze me.

Please read this book before your surgery. And have your designated caretakers read it. And have your on-call part-time only-if-really-needed caretakers read this book. Sandra's humor and positive attitude make a "How To" book a pleasure to read.

Helping Make Your Recovery as Painfree as Possible.

Back pain! Those two words are about as thrilling as hearing the words "Tooth ache!" It's was good then the author, Sandra, tackles this important topic. I especially like how she doesn't solely base the book on her own surgery, but rather focuses on how to set up your home to help your recover process be less painful and as stress free as possible.

What she does is cover many practical things that need to be attended to to make your recovery as speedy as it can be. Somethings you may be aware of, many you might not know until you are faced with it. By being informed and proactive about your recovery enables you to be far better prepared.

As an example, I like how each chapter finishes with a section called "Tips & Action Items." It's here that the author gives you a wealth of ideas that you would be in the dark on, had it been for her insight. Simple tips include; buying slip on shoes, installing shower bars, and purchasing several reachers. I also like her use of the term "BLT", and no it's not bacon, lettuce and tomato.

Recovering from back pain is challenging enough. The last thing you need is further stress when you get home. That's why this highly practical book will be of great help to those recovering from back surgery.

Recover From Spine-Surgery Pain-Free With This Fabulous Book!

Although I have never personally suffered from back/spine pain, my mother has for many years and so I gifted this book to her. I remember as a kid growing up and the terrible pain she went through for years because of the after effects of the surgery, loss of sleep at night, and the powerful mediation she needed just to walk.

This book is such a valuable gift to people who are going through this as well as their families. It is written by the author Sandra Jones who shares her own experiences with spoon surgery. What I love most about this book is that it doesn’t read like a medical journal with a lot of difficult terminology. Rather it is very practical, down-to earth advice that the author shares based on how she was able to function much better at home.

Each chapter focuses on a certain task in the house that is normally challenging for someone who has had back/spine surgery, considering the loss of mobility that can come with the operation. I really found the action list at the end of each chapter to sum it up so that someone can easily refer to the list when they are trying out these action tasks.

For example, getting home from the hospital and using a plastic bag to get out of the car; installing handrails at the entrance of the house and rolling in and out of bed. Although these actions come naturally for most of us, someone going through surgery recovery would struggle immensely with just basic movements.

I loved the BLT strategy as well [no bending, lifting, or twisting] that Sandra was told by her surgeon to avoid doing when she got home.
The other chapters are all GOLD and give invaluable advice such as setting up your kitchen, getting ready for bed, preparing the bathroom and bathroom business, the shower, and perhaps one of the most difficult of daily and routine tasks, getting dressed.

The bottom line:
If you or someone you know is going through this, the best thing you can do to help is to gift them this book. They will have valuable advice to follow from someone that has been through it and it will save so much needless pain and frustration. I only wish my mother had this book thirty years ago!
