Yesterday We Were in America: Alcock and Brown, First to fly the Atlantic non-stop
by Brendan Lynch

"Yesterday We Were in America!" Imagine saying that at a cocktail party, or to your friends and neighbors--in 1919. This is in fact the phrase pilot Alcock kept repeating to the crew of the Marconi radio station near which he had landed, and who simply would not believe him until he produced as evidence a sealed mailbag from Newfoundland, his point of departure 1,880 miles back across the Atlantic. This is about as exotic a pronouncement as today saying "Yesterday We Were on Mars!" It was totally unprecedented. It had only been three weeks earlier that an Atlantic crossing by a US Navy flying boat, that in a pinch could have set down on the water and rendevoused with a rescue boat, had concluded--and that had taken 19 days of flying in short stages (for a total of 57:16 housrs in the air). And now Cpt John Alcock and Lt Arthur Whitten Brown had done a 1900-mile nonstop crossing from Newfoundland to Ireland, nonstop in 16 hours and in a rickety Vickers Vimy biplane at that.

We live in a world that has in the lifespan of one generation gone from horse-drawn buggy to putting a man on the moon and has seen everyday supersonic civilian air travel come and go. Been there, done that. But a newspaper reader in 1919 would have been overcome with excitement at the novelty of this flight--the longest distance traveled nonstop by man--in a world still new to mechanization in general and aviation in particular. (Recall that the war that had ended a year earlier--the Great War, World War One--had started with horses and ended with tanks!)

And excitement was generated again in 2005. Seeing the Vimy land in Ireland at the end of the reenactment of Alcock and Brown's 1919 flight by adventurers Steve Fossett and Mark Rebholtz inspired the author to write this book. Lynch tells an engaging story drawing from Alcock and Brown's own written records, contemporary news coverage, and from eyewitness accounts such as that of the one witness to the 1919 arrival in Ireland who is still alive. (He was seven years old at the time.) Early on Lynch threads the needle of what unlikely heroes these pioneers were so that the reader, at the end, having traveled the full arc, duly commiserates with their tragic end.

A good amount of background is established by recapping the exploits of balloonists, the Wright brothers, and the national sentiments and political stirrings that resulted in the issuance of a £10,000 (ca. £500,000 in today's money) challenge from the Daily Mail newspaper. Lynch explains the building of the Vimy at the Vickers plant located on the Brooklands racetrack grounds, and the dominance of the Rolls-Royce Eagle engines (#5244 and 5246 on the Alcock/Brown Vimy) that propelled all but one of the seven contenders for the prize money. (A peripheral but pertinent observation: Readers already familiar with aero engine development will know to dismiss the now debunked story retold here of the influence of the Mercedes engine on Eagle development. Everyone else is encouraged to bone up on this.)

The details of the flight itself will have you twitching in your chair. The story of the aftermath--knighthoods, international acclaim--casts a harsh light on the toll fame takes.

The photos, all b&w, are bundled into two sections. They show what needs to be shown but there is nothing new to the record here (not a criticism, just a fact). A Foreword by Len Deighton, an Appreciation by Steve Fossett, a map, a bibliography of books, a list of news sources (only by name and not specific issue/date or the like), and an index round out the book.

This atlas is the offspring of the “The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference,” hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

Review

From the reviews:

“The book maintains a consistent style and tone that makes the recommendations readily accessible and comprehensible. … All chapters are also amply illustrated, with a high standard of photographic quality maintained throughout. … The text is accompanied by outstanding photographs that do a surprisingly good job of illustrating the kinds of cytologic scenarios that lead to the use of this category. … providing an attractive, practical, and concise primer that is sure to be welcomed by students and seasoned professionals … .” (Michael J. Thrall, The ASC Bulletin, Vol. XLVIII (2), March, 2011)

From the Back Cover

Thyroid fine needle aspiration is one of the most commonly performed cytologic procedures and is the standard diagnostic method for managing the patient with a thyroid nodule.  Until now, there has been no uniform system for reporting the results of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the U.S.

The terminology described in this book is an important advance in the field of cytopathology. It represents the results of the multidisciplinary National Cancer Institute Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration State of The Science Conference, held in Bethesda, MD in October, 2007.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It will serve as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

Where are the color pictures?

In a digital age is really a shame that this book's pictures are black & white. I thought that this thing was a feature from the past, when all books where b&W. They didn't take in consideration the i-pad and pc readers.

Where are the colors?

Pictures in black and white in a pathology book?! This is awful! I want my money back! Even the cover is black and white. How do you expect me to understand cytology with no colors at all?

buy the soft cover, not the kindle
By J. Mistle
from the reviews, it seems that the kindle edition is all still in black and white. i suggest buying the real book. the colors are crucial, and the minute detail are well seen on the actual book. I recommend this book for all students of pathology. It is written in the style of the first Bethesda book on cervical cytology.

The Deja Vu Experience (Essays in Cognitive Psychology), by ALAN S. BROWN

Most of us have been perplexed by a strange sense of familiarity when doing something for the first time. We feel that we have been here before, or done this before, but know for sure that this is impossible. In fact, according to numerous surveys, about two-thirds of us have experienced déjà vu at least once, and most of us have had multiple experiences.

There are a number of credible scientific interpretations of déjà vu, and this book summarizes the broad range of published work from philosophy, religion, neurology, sociology, memory, perception, psychopathology, and psychopharmacology. This book also includes discussion of cognitive functioning in retrieval and familiarity, neuronal transmission, and double perception during the déjà vu experience.

Review
"During the past two decades, however, a few hardy souls have reopened the scientific study of deja vu. They hope to nail down a persuasive explanation of the phenomenon, as well as shed light on some fundamental elements of memory and cognition. In the new book The Deja Vu Experience: Essays in Cognitive Psychology (Psychology Press), Alan S. Brown, a professor of psychology at Southern Methodist University, surveys the fledgling subfield. "What we can try to do is zero in on it from a variety of different angles," he says. "It won't be something like, 'Boom! The explanation is there.' But we can get gradual clarity through some hard work..""
-The Chronicle of Higher Education
"Overall this book is an interesting and enjoyable read. The author has done a fine job of assembling and summarizing such a large and diverse body of work covering a long period of time. He demonstrates that the phenomenon is by no means beyond the reach of mainstream cognitive psychology and this book will be an invaluable source for those interested in researching this intriguing phenomenon. -- Kevin Crowley, University of Glamorgan, UK."
"the first book-length scientific study of the phenomenon since the 1980s."
-"The Dallas Morning News, 11/2004

deja vu book review
By Wijdan Al-ahmad
Alan s. Brown wrote the book, the déjà vu experience, in 2004. This book talks about the déjà vu experience and how it has been scientifically studied. The book provides the reader with a number of historical facts about the journey of the déjà vu studies and essays that were written about déjà vu. The déjà vu experience also provides the reader with different thoughts about what déjà vu is. This book could be a good start and a good reference for researching the déjà vu experience and especially the causes of déjà vu. The book also talks about Jamais Vu. Basically this book is a research book Scientific vocabulary was used a lot in the book. The language that was used in this book is a little hard, because of the fact that it is a scientific book.
The first chapter of this book is the introduction of the book. The introduction has several examples of the déjà vu experience. The first chapter provides the reader with a short definition of the experience without explaining what is really happening. After the f that the book explains why scientists should study this experience. A number of essays and books about studying déjà vu are listed with all their publication dates. The last paragraph in this chapter provides a summary of when the research about the déjà vu topic started.
The following chapter gives a brief definition of the déjà vu experience. This chapter contains a list of English terms used to describe the déjà vu experience with the dates of their use. Thirty-two terms are listed. This chapter collects all the definitions that scientists have invented since the 1800s. The chapter also has subtypes of this experience listed with all of their meanings.
The following chapters report data about déjà vu and its investigation. There is a brief explanation of how scientists design surveys and the problems they face. Also a description of how the samples of scurvies are unrepresentative. Then the book provides the reader with subjective and objective evaluations of déjà vu of a total population. Frequency and type of déjà vu was discussed in the book, too. The nature and the causes of the déjà vu experience are briefly explained. The book also talks about the physical reaction of a person after experiencing déjà vu. Age seems to be so important in this book and in explaining déjà vu. The book has a whole chapter talking about age at the first experience and age when a person has déjà vu a lot. The chapters briefly discuss how déjà vu explanation varies from one person to another, and from one researcher to another.
Starting from chapter seven, the book starts to states the déjà vu experience pathologically. The book has most of the possible diseases that déjà vu might be related to and goes over each one explaining the relationship that the diseases might have with déjà vu. Also, the déjà vu experience has the description of why people with this disease might have déjà vu experience.
Then, the book shows the exact opposite of déjà vu, which is Jamais Vu. Jamais Vu is an objectively familiar situation that feels unfamiliar. The book explains how déjà vu and Jamais Vu are related. The book provides the reader with incident of Jamais Vu, like déjà vu. By the end, the book provides the reader with as much information as possible about déjà vu. The book presents explanations, causes, and studies. Each chapter of the book has a short summary.
The last chapter is a conclusion of this book and of all the research that is in the book. The appendixes in this book are very helpful, even though they are short ones. They have descriptions of the déjà vu experiences and a summary of the scientific explanation of déjà vu.
Over all, I like this book. It has so many hard words in it, but that is the nature of the subject. There is no unnecessary information that is in the book. It was so interesting to read, I didn't get bored at all or fall asleep while reading it. I like books with short chapters so I don't get lost or confused while reading them, and this book is one of those books. The book is a relatively short book. This book has given me a lot of information about how scientists started thinking of déjà vu, and how hard it was to understand and study the déjà vu experience.

The Last Highlander, by Sarah Fraser

Fans of C.J. Sansom must read this Saltire Society Literary Awards Scottish First Book of the Year – a great non-fiction adventure about Scotland’s most notorious clan chief.

Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, was the last of the great Scottish chiefs – and the last nobleman executed for treason. Determined to seek his fortune with the exiled Jacobite king in France, Fraser acted as a spy for both the Stuarts and the Hanoverians; claimed to be both Protestant and Roman Catholic.

In July 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie launched his last attempt to seize back the throne, supported by Fraser and his clans. They were defeated at Culloden. Fraser was found hiding in a tree.

This swashbuckling spy story recreates an extraordinary period of history in its retelling of Fraser’s life. He is surely one of Scotland’s most notorious and romantic figures, a cunning and ambitious soldier who died a martyr for his country and an independent Scotland.

Excellent, evocative and historically detailed!
By John Fraser
This book starts out with an introduction to the life of the Scottish Highlands in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, providing the stage setting for the remarkable exploits and life of Simon Fraser, the last member of the British House of Lords to be beheaded on Tower Hill. The author portrays a young man raised to the sound of Gaelic poetry, bagpipes, and the legends of the Clan Fraser. His father was a possible heir to the Barony of Lovat, but of a junior line. Only when the senior line died out without a male heir did Simon's father inherit the Barony. The men of the Clan Fraser fell into line behind Simon and his father, following ancient Highland custom.

A MacKenzie lord, allied with the Atholl Murrays, then conspired to use every trick in the Scottish legal system to subordinate the Frasers to the MacKenzies. Simon rallied the Frasers to resist, eventually resulting in the MacKenzie candidate (and husband of the female heir of the senior line) being jailed while a gibbet was built outside his jail cell at Castle Dounie - the Fraser stronghold. The MacKenzie candidate resigned his claims to the Fraser clan and its lands. Simon became Chief of the Frasers and Lord Lovat when his father died soon thereafter.

The author, who is married to a Lovat Fraser, tells the ensuing tale in a way that evokes the dangers, the loyalties, and the many ways that Scotland's legal system was subject to corruption in the early 18th century. Simon was eventually outlawed in Scotland and fled to the Jacobite court in France, where he met King James and Louis XIV, and tried to win back his claims to a Highland estate by planning and promoting a Jacobite invasion of Scotland. Simon was jailed by order of King Louis.

The tale of how the Fraser subchiefs sent a loyal chief to rescue Simon, how Simon led the Frasers in capturing Inverness and supporting Hanover against a Jacobite invasion, and how eventually Simon won back the favor of King George I, is a tale of espionage, double-dealing, derring-do, and a very accurate portrait of the conspirators in both London and St. Germain-en-Laye.

After describing the failed, early Jacobite rebellions, the author weaves a tale of Clan Fraser recovery, largely through Simon's masterful use of favoritism, corruption, and a judicial appeal to the British House of Lords that was a plain and gross breach of the 1707 Treaty of Union. From 1719 to 1745, Simon did everything he could to restore the Clan Fraser.

The author invokes the color, the traditions, and the plain hard facts of Scottish Highland life in the 18th century. Without excessive sentiment, the acts leading to the destruction of Clan Fraser - and the complete frustration of all the hopes of Simon Fraser - are all laid out with historical accuracy and contemporary details. The author suggests that Simon supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 because the Hanoverian government had withdrawn its financial and political support, and that Simon gambled all and lost. The sad story of how Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, sent his oldest son and his Clan into the 1745 rebellion and destruction, and how Simon was eventually executed after a trial in the House of Lords, is well and truly told.

[ A Must Read]
By karin morgan
A look into Scotland's politics at the time.A great insight into Scottish life, and how Simon Fraser saved his clan. Also how the Scottish had to navigate British rule. A great read, anyone interested in Scottish history before and after the 1745 uprising should read it. Once I started reading, could not put down. Coming from an American History buff

Accessible and Gripping.
By Kate Barber
I bought this book after reading Max Hasting's favourable review in the Sunday Times. The Last Highlander book is a must read for those interested in Scottish History, the Jacobite cause and Bonnie Prince Charlie. But Sarah Fraser's book is also suitable for those interested in good historical biographies and colourful characters. Fraser uses the life of Lord Lovat as a prism, to then shine a light upon the politics, wars and culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Lord Lovat is a classic rogue. We may not always approve of his behaviour, but we always enjoy his company. There is a great set piece opening, with Lovat heading to his execution, but such is the author's talent - and Lord Lovat's dramatic life - that we are still gripped by what will happen next.
