On the cover of this book is a Pacific yew tree, found in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest. The bark of the Pacific yew tree produces Taxol, found to be a highly effective drug against ovarian and breast cancer. Taxol blocks mitosis during eukaryotic cell division. The supply of Taxol from the Pacific yew tree is vanishingly small, however. A single 100-year-old tree provides only about one dose of the drug (roughly 300 mg). For this reason, as well as the spectacular molecular architecture of Taxol, synthetic organic chemists fiercely undertook efforts to synthesize it. Five total syntheses of Taxol have thus far been reported. Now, a combination of isolation of a related metabolite from European yew needles, and synthesis of Taxol from that intermediate, supply the clinical demand. This case clearly demonstrates the importance of synthesis and the use of organic chemistry. It's just one of the many examples used in the text that will spark the interest of students and get them involved in the study of organic chemistry!

Best Orgo Book Ever

Solomons is like a bible to me as a lab tech. I had it for my undergrad course in orgo and found it to be very thorough. It is a good resource, clear and to the point. The mechanisms were very nice. I TAed for orgo afterwards and they used a different book called Jones which was alot more confusing. I was thankful that I had Solomons becasue the Jones book rambles and tells you things that aren't even true after going on for like two pages.

Are you a freshman chemistry student? Do you plan to become a researcher in a quantitative and/or theoretical field and/or do you "just" want a reasonably complete understanding of what you are doing all day, regardless of what your profession will be or is already? Then read on!
The present book is a complete clone of the other available textbooks on the subjects; McMurry, Schmid, Volhardt etc. can thus be treated as one single book and you can just pick one at random. (One exception is the text by Whitesell and Fox, which is fabulous in that it is completely oriented around mechanism, which is the perspective used by every professional. However, even that book - like those mentioned here - suffers from being directed at students without any background knowledge of math and science. I am now planning to write a book for Wiley on basic organic chemistry, that assumes knowledge of calculus and physical chemistry. The demand seems to be enormous for such a text, not least since tens of thousands of scientists in the physical sciences are now turning their focus towards biology. The text should appear within the next few years and suggestions can be mailed at will.)
All texts present exactly the same bits of information - chosen from an actually endlessly varied field; they have nearly identical illustrations, nearly identical exercises, present identical, absurd falsifications of atomic and molecular structure; the exact same substances are discussed (=solid evidence of plagiarization; the substances are "classical" only to the aged authors and you are not likely to meet the majority of them again), the exact same explanations are given, everything is repeated four times making most of the text mass redundant; overall the books are criminally incoherent, much due to that substance classes rather than reaction classes form the "basis" of the chapter division [note: NOT "...the basis of the 'organization'...", since organization can only exist when the reaction classes are the basis for the discussions, the one thing that brings order to organic chemistry!]; never does anyone take a more "holistic" or just "passioned" view, to actually demonstrate the monumental versatility of the concepts discussed - and exactly the same highly vital information is left out, about how to interpret or control all the hundreds of written consecutive equillibria, or what difference it makes to use the methoxide rather than the ethoxide, or why 70% phosphoric acid is used (or, indeed, what is meant by 70%), or why precisely 780K and not 775Kis needed, or how you actually carry out a single reaction and what apparatus should be used, or how you handle and isolate the substances; or how you name those compounds that show up later than the first few chapters (when all the authors suddenly forget the previous efforts of showing completeness in presentation).
The overall impresssion is that of a book from junior high that is just terribly overgrown.

After using this book for two quarters of organic chemistry at UCLA I am confident in entering my third quarter using this same book. Not only is it vital in order to understand the basics of organic chemistry it is also a great study tool for the MCAT. Solomons presents the material in a matter fact way that is easy to understand. If you are going to study organics this is the book to have!

Amazing !

Amazing read on the whole world of technology.

Dr. Jordan covers the whole world of technology and the incredible rate of change in a great read that unlocks the keys of where tech is going and why.

He covers hundreds of examples -- businesses and industries that are being blown away and startups and technology that start in a garage and remake our world. From handhelds to GPS to gaming to Nation State warfare to Venture Capital, the book gives you insight into how all these area are changing and you only have to read one book rather than the 20,000 or so sources he must have referenced. Excellent!

For example, how can Wal-Mart, CVS, and Walgreens solve the nation's health care problems with simple clinics that are cheap and practical and successful and insured, thus ending emergency room over crowding and delivering medical help to people who need it at very low prices - Check out page 216.

How do checklists, like those used by pilots, radically improve medicine -- p 218.

Usability is key to technology adoption - page 79.

The history of innovation - Chapter 8 -- very complete and very brief in just 8 pages!

Provocative, deep, well-written, FUN

The subjects covered are broad and very complex, but John Jordan's ability to crystallize an issue, tease out its implications and connect it to broader subjects makes this expert survey manageable and easy to follow.

It's also a great read, with a concise but entertaining prose style and a mind that constantly zooms in on a complex subject and zooms out again to make connections across a wide range of disciplines and spheres of social life.

Unlike most business writers, Jordan has a fluid, easy manner that commingles deep analysis with interesting references to poets and artists, scientists and seers, businessmen and revolutionaries. Jordan quotes the poet Jane Kenyon, skillfully weaves in an analysis of Marx, Veblen and Daniel Bell, and makes interesting use of a wide range of unusual examples such as David Bowie's asset-backed security using revenue from his records as collateral and the behavioral finance theories of equity strategist Michael Mauboussin. The book is a jewel box of insights and fresh views.

Especially valuable is the way the book is organized, in four sections that go from the most fundamental and profound insights about the nature and uniqueness of this non-physical, "cognitive" revolution ("Foundations") and its impact on big areas of social life ("Work and Organization") to more specialized, business-related topics ("Business Model Disruption" and "Technology Landscapes") and finally to the most interesting section of all, "Some Big Questions" about identity and privacy, relationships, space and "virtuality," conflict and war, and innovation generally.

This is also a superb reference book for anyone interested in business or social change generally. Highly recommended.

As a seasoned instructor, novices will benefit from Dr. Jordan's introduction and topic development. However, advanced readers will also benefit both from the breadth of discussion, as well as the notes that accompany each chapter.

As an early fan of futurist George Gilder, I was pleased to see the book begin with the "second half of the chessboard" story. Further insight into the book can be divined from its five sections: Foundations, Work and Organization, Business Model Disruption, Technology Landscapes, and Some Big Questions.

Many will agree that our economy moved from industrial to automation with the transistor invention. This book helps support the important notion that we are now transforming from automation to a subsequent economy. In particular, leaders and educators should pay heed to Dr. Jordan's "some big questions" section. Here Dr. Jordan summarizes implications ranging from identity and privacy, to innovation.

When I reached 40, I thought I had already achieved all my dreams. I had a family, a home, and a job I enjoyed that allowed me to combine motherhood and a profession. Well, I encountered the Angels and life has become a challenging, wonder-filled adventure where the bad moments, the nightmares, the falls from pride, the often shameful awakenings along with the surprising synchronicities, the awe inspiring dreams and visions and unexpected gifts turning up out of the blue lead to the knowledge that I am now empowered to cleanse my faults, purify my flaws, pay off some of my debts, transcend my distortions and develop pure qualities to rediscover my Divine self and to fulfill my purpose here on Earth. Detoxifying is not always very pleasant, but the benefits gained lead us to dreams beyond our imagination. As I approach 50, I can laugh at my 40 year-old self for I now have so many dreams itll take all this life for them to be fulfilled! Steve Biko was one of the foremost figures in South Africa's struggle for liberation from the apartheid regime. Murdered by the police when he was only 30, he had already established himself as a leader through his work as a political activist and his writings on Black Consciousness. I Write What I Like was first published in 1978 shortly after his brutal murder in detention. Powerful!

With everything we have heard in the media recently, this book is right on. Every racial group should develop it's own consciousness, and come together as one. We seem to missing many points, not least is "we are all in this together!". By raising our consciousness as individuals we can elevate our own understanding and make the world a much better place. Steve Biko's writings help us to understand how we can move forward. This book should be used as a teaching tool in every school. With deepest sincerity and effort we can change the world, and make it a better place for all. Biko!

Frantz Fanon vs Steve Biko

I am somewhat disappointed with the book - maybe because I have read most of the books authored by Frantz Fanon The Wretched of the Earth. Although I have sympathy with the author and his cause, no new ideas were added to the argument regarding black consciousness and apartheid.

More Biko

This is a collection of Steve Biko's writings and testimonies and others' essays analyzing the collection of writings or the relationship they had with Biko. While I found Biko's writings and testimonies to be extremely interesting, they constituted about half of this book. The remainder was the essays I formerly mentioned. While some of these writings were very interesting studies of the material presented, others, while informative, were uninteresting.
