The core of the ground-breaking, three text edition, this self-contained, free-standing volume gives readers the Second Quarto text (1604-5) and includes in its Introduction, notes and Appendices all the reader might expect to find in any standard Arden edition. As well as a full, illustrated Introduction to the playÂ's historical, cultural and performance contexts and a thorough survey of critical approaches to the play, an appendix contains the additional passages found only in the 1623 text. "The new Arden Hamlet is a pathbreaking edition, one that promises to change irrevocably our understanding of Shakespeare's greatest play." - Professor James Shapiro, author of 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare Â"Hamlet's latest editors have undertaken a heroic task with great skill and thoroughnesss.Â" - Stanley Wells, The Observer "(The) new Arden Hamlet is quite simply the most comprehensive edition of the play currently available, a status I suspect it will enjoy for many years to come" - The British Theatre Guide "Stunning! There is absolutely no doubt about this being the text to buy if you are studying the play at A Level. And the same stands for those students who will be studying the play at university. This critical edition gives the reader the Second Quarto Text (1604-1605), annotated with intelligence and care, a wealth of historical and cultural references and a survey of different critical approaches to the play." - The Use of English, The English Association

Review

“The Arden3 Hamlet is fascinating, and every Shakespeare scholar will want to possess it. The editors' approach is attuned to the relativism, pluralism, and skepticism of our time, and it is defended with remarkable thoroughness and intelligence....Thompson and Taylor's introductory material is in line with their treatment of the text...they are concerned to introduce the reader to the multitude of diverse critical approaches and to the variety within the developing theatrical tradition. They do this very well, and their discussion of Hamlet on stage and screen and of its offshoots in drama and fiction fills a notable gap...The full and consistently interesting commentary is also enlivened by snippets of information about performances...Thompson and Taylor have made an innovative and stimulating contribution to the Arden3 series.” ―Shakespeare Quarterly

“Hamlet...has been given a rebirth of sorts by editors Ann Thompson and Neil Taylor...puts the final pieces of the "puzzle of Hamlet" into place by publishing...updated versions of both the First Quarto and First Folio editions of the play. This wonderful ternion gives the serious students of Hamlet everything they need to delve deeply into the Dane. The textual annotations are extensive and worth the price of the book alone. None of the material is duplicated from the Hamlet: Arden Third Series, so this is all new commentary from two of the brightest minds in the world of Shakespeare... Delivers the quality you've come to expect from Arden.” ―PlayShakespeare.com

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare
By Gilgamesh
I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage ...
By Andi
I am a high school teacher and this was the first "No Fear" play I've used for my English classes. Before this, I used the Folger editions. To be honest, I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage because they were no longer learning how to read Shakespearean language. While this does provide convenient translations--students start relying too heavily on them. In addition, the translations don't always translate every word/line; it's mostly a translation of the general meaning. Thus, again, students are not learning to really decipher the language. The Folger versions, on the other hand, give translations for specific words that students then have to plug in in order to understand the actual Shakespearean language. I'm switching back to Folgers next year. However, I'd still say that this would be fine as a companion piece for students to check their understanding, but I wouldn't use this as the only text.

Excellent critical text with helpful notes
By Holly E. Ordway
I've been teaching Hamlet using this text for about two years (four semesters) to college freshmen/sophomores in a general composition/literature class. The Ignatius edition is the best that I've used (and I've used several); I put it slightly ahead of the Folger edition. (The Folger edition does have the advantage that it includes plot summaries of scenes -- very helpful to beginning Shakespeare readers -- which the Ignatius lacks.)

The essays that are included are solid and insightful. They are particularly helpful in helping readers understand the Christian context of the play. Regardless of whether or not the reader is Christian, it's necessary to understand Christian ideas about sin, repentance, and justice in order to grasp the nuances of the play. When students are encouraged to really think deeply about these topics, they end up making connections between the events of the play and the events of their own lives -- for instance, about the struggle between desire ("I want what I want" -- just like Claudius) and reason ("I want to do what is right -- but how do I figure out what that is?" -- like Hamlet). This edition has been the most useful for me in terms of helping my students to do this kind of deep thinking.

On a practical level, I like the editor's choices about what words to gloss; to any adult reader who has read a lot of Shakespeare and other classic authors, the vocabulary glosses may seem like overkill, but it has been my experience that my 18-22-year-old students need and benefit from them.

It is helpful that the glosses are footnoted rather than end- or side-noted; this makes it easier to find them if you need them, while not being too intrusive if you don't. Visually, it's an attractive edition with plenty of white space -- important for taking marginal notes! - and the full names of characters spelled out.

Frequent Flyer Humor and One-Upmanship, by George W. Stewart

Frequent flying is sometimes unpleasant. Sometimes in extremis. This is the antidote.

Frequent Flyer Humor and One-Upmanship is a collection of humorous or incongruous short stories and one-liners, sometimes sophisticated, which ameliorate the annoyances of frequent flying. One-Upmanship because some of the information is unknown to most people. It provides smiles and chuckles, punctuated by an occasional guffaw. It's created for the Frequent Flyer by a former Frequent Flyer.

Excerpts

On a nice little De Havilland twin prop, Toronto to Baltimore: "Okay, so we have fifteen of you today. Anyone not flown before?
Good. No virgins. Then I'll do the short version.
Exits over the wings, life jackets beneath the seats, oxygen masks drop out of the ceiling. Put them on in the usual way. Seats up. Belts on. Read the cards. Enjoy your flight. Questions?"

You're traveling too much when you see the same flight attendants twice in the same day.  And they know your name.

Jet Lag: "Wallet in refrigerator. Where's the milk?"

"Delta Airlines is pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry. Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight."

"We're ready to begin boarding Flight 1234 with service from Miami to Atlanta. Due to a weight problem with the aircraft, we are going to limit you to one piece of carry-on luggage. Any additional items will have to be checked."

After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the flight attendant came on with: "Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Captain Crash has brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. Once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we'll open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal."

   Great Airline Lies
       Short hold for a gate
Short hold for Air Traffic Control
       Brief holding pattern
       Slight delay
       Momentary re-boarding
       Light turbulence

Near the conclusion of an extremely turbulent American Airlines flight, a cabin attendant finished his "stowed-tray-table-and-upright-seat" speech with a cheerful, "We'd like to thank you for flying American Airlines. But if you were displeased with the flight, thank you for flying United."

Entertaining Flight Humor
By Melissa P.
I am not much of a flyer. To be quite honest my flying career can be summed up with one trip and it was to Dyersville, Tennessee for a brief vacation in 2000. Okay, with that being said, George W. Stewart's book "Frequent Flyer Humor" is absolutely hilarious! Although I am not a frequent flyer, I found this book to be quite entertaining and just down right funny.

I decided to read "Frequent Flyer Humor" during my commute from work. I thought it would give me a chuckle during the rough ride home. And did it ever! About five pages in I had to close the book because my excessive snickering began to disturb the passengers around me. Seriously, I was laughing so much that tears were streaming down my face. The collective stories of bad flight service to insane passenger questions made me laugh like crazy! I could not believe some of the reactions, responses and questions that people ask or say while traveling. I work in customer service so I really related to some of the bizarre stories from the flight crew.

"Frequent Flyer Humor" is a cluster of short narratives, phrases and actual events that frequent flyers and flight personnel have experienced during their aviation travels. One special note, if you are not a veteran of flying, there are a few "Frequent Flyer" terms that may cause some turbulence during your read. But don't fret, the author has created a nifty little reference guide (located in the back of the book) to assist you.

I have to admit, when you read this book please enter with an open mind and have a great sense of humor. It was written to poke fun at some the silly things frequent flyers go through or do while in flight so prepare to laugh out loud non-stop. Happy travels!

Laugh Out Loud
By Harrison Jones
This is a wonderful collection of aviation humor. After 40 years in aviation, I am convinced that as most passengers approach the terminal, their brain somehow exits their posterior. This book justifies my conclusion. If you're involved in aviation in any way, you will love this book. If you're not involved in aviation, you will also love this book. Mr. Stewart causes us to examine the human condition from many viewpoints and my reaction ranged from chuckles to uncontrolled belly laughs. I highly recommend this book. You deserve a good laugh and you will now have an arsenal of funny stories to share at the next party.

Frequent flyer finds humor in flying where he didn't expect
By Paul
I got into a car at the airport after a long day of flying. The driver saw I was a little stressed and handed me a copy of Frequent Flyer Humor and suggested it might take the edge off. For the rest of the ride home, I was laughing and talking with the driver. I felt like I discovered a treasure. I have since bought 10 books as thank you gifts to colleagues, Christmas books for friends and family, and an extra copy in my bag at all times just in case I find the circumstance to help someone else take the edge off of their day. A great all around read for flyers and non flyers alike.

Ain't No Tomorrow : Kobe, Shaq, and the Making of a Lakers Dynasty, by Elizabeth Kaye

An all-access look at the Lakers' championship season

. .

"Elizabeth Kaye is a wonderful writer--as a reporter she's like a bulldog--she grabs onto you and doesn't let go until she figures out everything about you. Throughout Ain't No Tomorrow, she discovers and explains the game of basketball in a way that no one ever has. She takes the reader through the mental preparation, coaching strategies, and personal struggles of players--who are part Rocky and part Rambo. If you like to read, you'll love Ain't No Tomorrow."
--Sylvester Stallone

. .

At the start of the 2000 NBA playoffs, the famously underachieving Los Angeles Lakers found themselves the focus of national attention. The team that had limped along since the golden era of Magic Johnson was now endowed with basketball's two most gifted and dominant players, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, and was led by none other than Phil Jackson, the most fabled coach in the NBA. By the time the Lakers beat Indiana in game six of the championship series, they showed themselves unstoppable, a team above and apart and blessed with a glamour and facility that made them the obvious franchise to lead pro basketball into the new millennium.

. .

Then everything began to fall apart. Jackson had warned his team that the truly challenging season is the one after an initial big win, and his words were quickly becoming reality as the great team slipped into profound disarray at the start of the new season. Ain't No Tomorrow is an intimate look at the astonishing eight-month roller-coaster ride that became the Lakers' 2000-2001 season: a time of tumult and drama when impulses toward brotherhood and unity dissolved into petty, ugly battles and bruised egos; when men who previously rose to a great challenge grew greedy and slack.

. .

Combining brilliant reporting and original perspective, Elizabeth Kaye--a journalist granted special access to Jackson, Shaq, Kobe, and other major players--takes you into the minds and hearts of the team members. She chronicles the unique story of a team that ultimately righted itself, united, and found its way to a second championship title--but only after an extraordinary season in which exciting sports drama becomes human drama at its most compelling and complex.

From Library Journal
Journalist Kaye spent the 2000-01 season with the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers during their up-and-down quest for a repeat title. Coach Phil Jackson's teams are noted for running the Triangle Offense, but what is most evident in following his Lakers is that the Kobe Bryant/ Shaquille O'Neal/Phil Jackson triangle often took on soap-opera proportions. That soap opera is the focus of Kaye's book as she tries to explain how a championship team could implode so quickly in the regular season and then turn things around and come together as a team once again in time for the playoffs. At press time, the season appeared to be following the same story line, and if it ends the same way as last season, the Lakers can truly boast of the dynasty noted in the title of this work. The most interesting perspectives are offered by the many less-famous veteran players who served a valuable role in the championship run. Recommended for all public libraries. John Maxymuk, Rutgers Univ. Lib., Camden, NJ

From Booklist
The accepted adage in sports is that getting to the top is tough but staying there is exponentially tougher. The Los Angeles Lakers won the 2000 NBA championship behind Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, and the sage coaching of Phil Jackson. Could they do it again? Yes, but not easily. Author Kaye, whose work has appeared in such publications as Esquire and Rolling Stone, tracks the team's sometimes bumpy road to a repeat championship in 2001. She profiles the individual players and coaches (including the lesser knowns, like basketball gypsy Mike Penberthy); but, more pointedly, she focuses on the ephemeral chemistry that every successful team develops. Phil Jackson comes through as a subtle, clever, and knowing coach, confident enough to retreat to the background when a midseason feud erupted between Shaq and Kobe, the team's foundation. ("Family" spats, Jackson learned during his championship years with the Chicago Bulls, are best allowed to dissipate on their own timeline.) An intelligent, thoughtful examination of the mental focus required for professional sports success. Wes Lukowsky

I LIKED IT
By COOL JEWEL
THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK HAS NO EXPERIENCE COVERING SPORTS. IN HER FIRST ATTEMPT I THINK SHE DOES A VERY GOOD JOB DESCRIBING THE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON OF THE 2000 LAKERS. THE DETAILED RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PLAYERS IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS BOOK. NOT ONLY KOBE AND SHAQ BUT ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS ARE OF INTEREST IN THIS STORY. FROM ROBERY HORRY TO RICK FOX TO PHIL JACKSON, YOU FIND OUT SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT EACH ONE OF THEM. BUT THE MAIN STORY IS THE COMING OF AGE OF KOBE FROM A BALL HOG TO A COMPLETE PLAYMAKER AND PASSER. I RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL BASKETBALL FANS.

Nothing new for real fans
By A Customer
This is a good book for part-time Laker fans. They get to learn a lot about locker room stories.
But if you're someone who regularly follow the Lakers'exploits during the season, on the internet or otherwise, you're not getting any wiser by reading this book. The author was just repeating articles form the LA Times, OCR and other sources. Reading passages in the book you get the feeling that you've already read that somewhere else.
This ain't a David Halberstram book.

I loved Ain't No Tomorrow. I found out things I never knew and not only about the Lakers but players like Allen Iverson and Michael Jordan. It's a great book. There's never been any basketball book like it. Don't miss this one.

Amazon.com Review
Stephen King and Nelson DeMille on Ed McBain

I think Evan Hunter, known by that name or as Ed McBain, was one of the most influential writers of the postwar generation. He was the first writer to successfully merge realism with genre fiction, and by so doing I think he may actually have created the kind of popular fiction that drove the best-seller lists and lit up the American imagination in the years 1960 to 2000. Books as disparate as The New Centurions, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Godfather, Black Sunday, and The Shining all owe a debt to Evan Hunter, who taught a whole generation of baby boomers how to write stories that were not only entertaining but that truthfully reflected the times and the culture. He will be remembered for bringing the so-called "police procedural" into the modern age, but he did so much more than that. And he was one hell of a nice man. --Stephen King

Way back in the mid-1970s, when I was a new writer and police series were very big, my editor asked me to do a series called Joe Ryker, NYPD. I had no idea how to write a police detective novel, but the editor handed me a stack of books and said, “These are the 87th Precinct novels by Ed McBain. Read them and you’ll know everything you need to know about police novels.” After I read the first book--which I think was Let’s Hear It for the Deaf Man--I was hooked, and I read every Ed McBain I could get my hands on. Then I sat down and wrote my own detective novel, The Sniper, featuring Joe Ryker. My series never reached the heights of the 87th Precinct series, but by reading those classic masterpieces, I learned all I needed to know about urban crime and how detectives think and act. And I had a hell of a time learning from the master. Years later, when I actually got to meet Ed McBain/Evan Hunter, I told him this story, and he said, “I would have liked it better if my books inspired you to become a detective instead of becoming my competition.” Evan and I became friends, and I was privileged to know him and honored to be in his company. I remain indebted to him for his good advice over the years. But most of all, I thank him for hundreds of hours of great reading. --Nelson DeMille

First 87th Precinct Book
By A Customer
I first caught on to Ed Mcbain by accident with his Matthew Hope novels, I liked them so much I decided to find other works of his. That's when I found the 87th Precinct Series. I thought I'd never find the original because it was over 40 years old. Fortunately I was wrong. The description of an imaginary city is phenomenal, each character is slowly developed and revealed to you. I loved this first novel and look forward to reading the remainder of the series.

Life is a Con
By S. Michael Wilson
The fourth book in the 87th Precinct series, the title says it all as the members of the 87th attempt to track down con men preying on the weak and naive members of The City, as well as involving themselves in a few cons of their own.

Written in 1957, my favorite dated aspects of the narrative:

*When talking about pretty girls, it is noted that no one cares if you are smart "so long as you have a beautiful phizz."

*Pointing out the absurdity of something, it is stated that it "takes the brass bologna" and "wins the fur-lined bathtub."

Main man Steve Carella and his deaf/mute wife Teddy (who is yet again involved in a crime relating to Carella's investigations) track down a deadly Lonely Hearts killer, the impatient Brown attempts to stop a pair of street smart confidence men, and rookie Kling helps out while helping his college student fiancee Claire con her school into granting her an early vacation with Kling. The mischevious Meyer Meyer and violent Havilland take to the background in this short entry into the series.

As always, McBain's characters are all three dimensional and compelling, and he manages to explore the emotional and philisophical aspects of crimes, victims of crimes, and their protectors in a way that few ever match. The theme of the The Con is throughout the novel, from the obvious and dangerous to the subtle and benign, and as his opening states and story demonstrates, life itself is a con, and to some degree we are all Con Men.

ITS GREAT AND THATS NO CON!!!!
By Mac Blair
McBain has done it again. Another great book. Steve Carella is investigating the murders of young women who are floating to shore. Can Steve catch him before he strikes again???? There are several different cons going on at the same time. The others involve money and not murders. A tattoo artist gets in the middle along with Mrs. Carella. A good, short read that will make you want to read very fast. I nearly just scanned thelast twenty or so pages because I wanted to find out what the ending was. I think you will enjoy this very much.

Picture Theory: Essays on Verbal and Visual Representation, by W. J. T. Mitchell

What precisely, W. J. T. Mitchell asks, are pictures (and theories of pictures) doing now, in the late twentieth century, when the power of the visual is said to be greater than ever before, and the "pictorial turn" supplants the "linguistic turn" in the study of culture? This book by one of America's leading theorists of visual representation offers a rich account of the interplay between the visible and the readable across culture, from literature to visual art to the mass media.

From Library Journal
Mitchell (English and art, Univ. of Chicago), who is editor of Critical Inquiry, addresses a variety of concerns about the nexus of word and depiction. In cogent, jargon-free prose, Mitchell by turn takes up the reason behind a cartoon's apparent humor; the flow between narrative and memory, which can and has been ruptured by slavery; painterly theories; and much more. Incorporating theories propounded by Barthes, Wittgenstein, Magritte, and others, this volume is a veritable chocolate box of well-developed ideas for aesthetics students and scholars. It is also accessible to the lay reader, engaging for the researcher, and an emblematic resource for classroom discussion for the teacher of art history or philosophy. Recommended for most collections.

A classic
By Christoph Pingel
This book has to be considered as a classic in the field. Ironically, Mitchell's term 'pictorial turn' seems to be more widespread than knowledge of this book, with the unsettling consequence that many people talk about pictures *replacing* the word, and few about the intricate and complex relationship between the two.
The book is surprisingly well written, rarely has an academic book entertained me so much. For everybody who wants to know what *pictorial turn* means from the point of view of the person who coined this phrase, I can only recommend it warmest.

Rich Enough: What the Jesuits Have Written about Education, by Richard LaBelle

A critical examination of Jesuit education, Rich Enough explores the genesis and history of Ignatian thinking and Christian engagement with the culture. In this timely volume, Richard LaBelle examines works rarely treated by most modern commentators, including seminal texts by such authors as Joseph de Jouvancy, Richard Tierney, Francois Charmot, and Bernard Lonergan. As Jesuit education enters the 21st century, this combination of historical scholarship and fresh insights will prove crucial to the religious educator and theologian alike.

An Excellent Survey
By Stephen M. Beall
The last few decades have produced numerous books and articles on the “mission and identity” of Jesuit schools. What has been missing is a readable survey of the historical sources, including important documents before the 1970s. This deficiency has now been supplied by Richard LaBelle, a veteran lay teacher at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington. In *Rich Enough*, the reader will find both an outline of the history of Jesuit education and the elements of a program for carrying the work forward.

LaBelle opens the book with a personal memoir of his experience as a student and teacher in Jesuit schools. His sense of a gradual decline in student performance and confusion in educational priorities will resonate with teachers everywhere. He proposes to trace the history of Jesuit pedagogy, with a particular focus on the apostolic aims of the Society of Jesus. The persistence of these aims in the midst of cultural change is the theme of the book. The title is taken from the *Suscipe* or Prayer of Self-offering of St. Ignatius: “Give me only the love of you and your grace, and I am rich enough….”

Subsequent chapters deal with documents from the formative years of the Society, such as the *Spiritual Exercises*, the Constitutions, the *Ratio Studiorum* (Plan of Studies) in its various drafts, and the handbook for teachers composed by Joseph Jouvancy. But LaBelle’s greatest contribution is to have filled in the gap between these foundational classics and the post-Vatican II *aggiornamento*. After the restoration of the Society in 1814, scientific courses were introduced into the curriculum, but without prejudice to its humanistic core. In fact, the Jesuits engaged in a spirited controversy with proponents of positivistic and progressive theories of education. To arm themselves for battle, they produced an impressive body of scholarship, including the seminal studies of Schwickerath, Farrell, and Charmot—works that might have been forgotten, were it not for LaBelle’s helpful summaries. Drawing from thinkers as diverse as Richard Tierney and Bernard Lonergan, LaBelle underscores the adaptability of Jesuit schools and their singleness of purpose. But things were about to change.

Vatican II invited the Jesuits to reflect more deeply on the sources of their project, and the exhortation of Pedro Arrupe might have reinvigorated the educational apostolate. But quasi-official publications such as *Profile of the Graduate* and *Ignatian Pedagogy: A Practical Approach* reflect a loss of confidence in traditional goals and methods. Although LaBelle highlights the good will and sound advice expressed in these documents, his other sources point to the conclusion that Jesuit education has broken from its theoretical moorings, to be swept along by various trends. It is especially difficult to retain the spirit of St. Ignatius where only a few teachers and administrators have been formed as Jesuits or by Jesuits. Efforts have been made, especially in the high schools, to introduce lay educators to Jesuit spirituality, but the impact of these programs is difficult to measure.

LaBelle concludes his survey on a cautiously optimistic note. There is a growing awareness among Jesuits that we need an alternative to the secular, positivistic, and materialistic tendencies of modern schools. To the extent that Jesuit educators observe the critical distinction between *plus* (more students, more subjects, more activities) and *magis* (what is more conducive to the glory of God and the benefit of human beings), they may yet be able to provide an experience that truly “satisfies and fills the soul” (*Spiritual Exercises*, Annotation 2).

STORY OF YOUR LIFE

Your father is about to ask me the question. This is the most important moment in our lives, and I want to pay attention, note every detail. Your dad and I have just come back from an evening out, dinner and a show; it’s after midnight. We came out onto the patio to look at the full moon; then I told your dad I wanted to dance, so he humors me and now we’re slow-dancing, a pair of thirtysomethings swaying back and forth in the moonlight like kids. I don’t feel the night chill at all. And then your dad says, “Do you want to make a baby?”

Right now your dad and I have been married for about two years, living on Ellis Avenue; when we move out you’ll still be too young to remember the house, but we’ll show you pictures of it, tell you stories about it. I’d love to tell you the story of this evening, the night you’re conceived, but the right time to do that would be when you’re ready to have children of your own, and we’ll never get that chance.

Telling it to you any earlier wouldn’t do any good; for most of your life you won’t sit still to hear such a romantic -- you’d say sappy -- story. I remember the scenario of your origin you’ll suggest when you’re twelve.

“The only reason you had me was so you could get a maid you wouldn’t have to pay,” you’ll say bitterly, dragging the vacuum cleaner out of the closet.

“That’s right,” I’ll say. “Thirteen years ago I knew the carpets would need vacuuming around now, and having a baby seemed to be the cheapest and easiest way to get the job done. Now kindly get on with it.”

“If you weren’t my mother, this would be illegal,” you’ll say, seething as you unwind the power cord and plug it into the wall outlet.

That will be in the house on Belmont Street. I’ll live to see strangers occupy both houses: the one you’re conceived in and the one you grow up in. Your dad and I will sell the first a couple years after your arrival. I’ll sell the second shortly after your departure. By then Nelson and I will have moved into our farmhouse, and your dad will be living with what’s-her-name.

I know how this story ends; I think about it a lot. I also think a lot about how it began, just a few years ago, when ships appeared in orbit and artifacts appeared in meadows. The government said next to nothing about them, while the tabloids said every possible thing.

And then I got a phone call, a request for a meeting.

* * *

I spotted them waiting in the hallway, outside my office. They made an odd couple; one wore a military uniform and a crewcut, and carried an aluminum briefcase. He seemed to be assessing his surroundings with a critical eye. The other one was easily identifiable as an academic: full beard and mustache, wearing corduroy. He was browsing through the overlapping sheets stapled to a bulletin board nearby.

“Colonel Weber, I presume?” I shook hands with the soldier. “Louise Banks.”

“Dr. Banks. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us,” he said.

“Not at all; any excuse to avoid the faculty meeting.”

Colonel Weber indicated his companion. “This is Dr. Gary Donnelly, the physicist I mentioned when we spoke on the phone.”

“Call me Gary,” he said as we shook hands. “I’m anxious to hear what you have to say.”
We entered my office. I moved a couple of stacks of books off the second guest chair, and we all sat down. “You said you wanted me to listen to a recording. I presume this has something to do with the aliens?”

“All I can offer is the recording,” said Colonel Weber.

“Okay, let’s hear it.”

Colonel Weber took a tape machine out of his briefcase and pressed play. The recording sounded vaguely like that of a wet dog shaking the water out of its fur.

“What do you make of that?” he asked.

I withheld my comparison to a wet dog. “What was the context in which this recording was made?”

“I’m not at liberty to say.”

“It would help me interpret those sounds. Could you see the alien while it was speaking? Was it doing anything at the time?”

“The recording is all I can offer.”

“You won’t be giving anything away if you tell me that you’ve seen the aliens; the public’s assumed you have.”

Colonel Weber wasn’t budging. “Do you have any opinion about its linguistic properties?” he asked.

“Well, it’s clear that their vocal tract is substantially different from a human vocal tract. I assume that these aliens don’t look like humans?”

The colonel was about to say something noncommittal when Gary Donelly asked, “Can you make any guesses based on the tape?”

“Not really. It doesn’t sound like they’re using a larynx to make those sounds, but that doesn’t tell me what they look like.”

“Anything--is there anything else you can tell us?” asked Colonel Weber.

I could see he wasn’t accustomed to consulting a civilian. “Only that establishing communications is going to be really difficult because of the difference in anatomy. They’re almost certainly using sounds that the human vocal tract can’t reproduce, and maybe sounds that the human ear can’t distinguish.”

“You mean infra- or ultrasonic frequencies?” asked Gary Donelly.

“Not specifically. I just mean that the human auditory system isn’t an absolute acoustic instrument; it’s optimized to recognize the sounds that a human larynx makes. With an alien vocal system, all bets are off.” I shrugged. “Maybe we’ll be able to hear the difference between alien phonemes, given enough practice, but it’s possible our ears simply can’t recognize the distinctions they consider meaningful. In that case we’d need a sound spectrograph to know what an alien is saying.”

Colonel Weber asked, “Suppose I gave you an hour’s worth of recordings; how long would it take you to determine if we need this sound spectrograph or not?”

“I couldn’t determine that with just a recording no matter how much time I had. I’d need to talk with the aliens directly.”

The colonel shook his head. “Not possible.”

I tried to break it to him gently. “That’s your call, of course. But the only way to learn an unknown language is to interact with a native speaker, and by that I mean asking questions, holding a conversation, that sort of thing. Without that, it’s simply not possible. So if you want to learn the aliens’ language, someone with training in field linguistics -- whether it’s me or someone else -- will have to talk with an alien. Recordings alone aren’t sufficient.”
Colonel Weber frowned. “You seem to be implying that no alien could have learned human languages by monitoring our broadcasts.”

“I doubt it. They’d need instructional material specifically designed to teach human languages to nonhumans. Either that, or interaction with a human. If they had either of those, they could learn a lot from TV, but otherwise, they wouldn’t have a starting point.”
The colonel clearly found this interesting; evidently his philosophy was, the less the aliens knew, the better. Gary Donnelly read the colonel’s expression too and rolled his eyes. I suppressed a smile.

Then Colonel Weber asked, “Suppose you were learning a new language by talking to its speakers; could you do it without teaching them English?”

“That would depend on how cooperative the native speakers were. They’d almost certainly pick up bits and pieces while I’m learning their language, but it wouldn’t have to be much if they’re willing to teach. On the other hand, if they’d rather learn English than teach us their language, that would make things far more difficult.”

The colonel nodded. “I’ll get back to you on this matter.”

The request for that meeting was perhaps the second most momentous phone call in my life. The first, of course, will be the one from Mountain Rescue. At that point your dad and I will be speaking to each other maybe once a year, tops. After I get that phone call, though, the first thing I’ll do will be to call your father.

He and I will drive out together to perform the identification, a long silent car ride. I remember the morgue, all tile and stainless steel, the hum of refrigeration and smell of antiseptic. An orderly will pull the sheet back to reveal your face. Your face will look wrong somehow, but I’ll know it’s you.

“Yes, that’s her,” I’ll say. “She’s mine.”

You’ll be twenty-five then.

The MP checked my badge, made a notation on his clipboard, and opened the gate; I drove the off-road vehicle into the encampment, a small village of tents pitched by the Army in a farmer’s sun-scorched pasture. At the center of the encampment was one of the alien devices, nicknamed “looking glasses.”

According to the briefings I’d attended, there were nine of these in the United States, one hundred and twelve in the world. The looking glasses acted as two-way communication devices, presumably with the ships in orbit. No one knew why the aliens wouldn’t talk to us in person; fear of cooties, maybe. A team of scientists, including a physicist and a linguist, was assigned to each looking glass; Gary Donnelly and I were on this one.

Gary was waiting for me in the parking area. We navigated a circular maze of concrete barricades until we reached the large tent that covered the looking glass itself. In front of the tent was an equipment cart loaded with goodies borrowed from the school’s phonology lab; I had sent it ahead for inspection by the Army.

Also outside the tent were three tripod-mounted video cameras whose lenses peered, through windows in the fabric wall, into the main room. Everything Gary and I did would be reviewed by countless others, including military intelligence. In addition we would each send daily reports, of which mine had to include estimates on how much English I thought the aliens could understand.
Gary held open the tent flap and gestured for me to enter. “Step right up,” he said, circus barker-style. “Marvel at creatures the likes of which have never been seen on God’s green earth.”
“And all for one slim dime,” I murmured, walking through the door. At the moment the looking glass was inactive, resembling a semicircular mirror over ten feet high and twenty feet across. On the brown grass in front of the looking glass, an arc of white spray paint outlined the activation area. Currently the area contained only a table, two folding chairs, and a power strip with a cord leading to a generator outside. The buzz of fluorescent lamps, hung from poles along the edge of the room, commingled with the buzz of flies in the sweltering heat.

Gary and I looked at each other, and then began pushing the cart of equipment up to the table. As we crossed the paint line, the looking glass appeared to grow transparent; it was as if someone was slowly raising the illumination behind tinted glass. The illusion of depth was uncanny; I felt I could walk right into it. Once the looking glass was fully lit it resembled a life-size diorama of a semicircular room. The room contained a few large objects that might have been furniture, but no aliens. There was a door in the curved rear wall.

We busied ourselves connecting everything together: microphone, sound spectrograph, portable computer, and speaker. As we worked, I frequently glanced at the looking glass, anticipating the aliens’ arrival. Even so I jumped when one of them entered.

It looked like a barrel suspended at the intersection of seven limbs. It was radially symmetric, and any of its limbs could serve as an arm or a leg. The one in front of me was walking around on four legs, three non-adjacent arms curled up at its sides. Gary called them “heptapods.”
I’d been shown videotapes, but I still gawked. Its limbs had no distinct joints; anatomists guessed they might be supported by vertebral columns. Whatever their underlying structure, the heptapod’s limbs conspired to move it in a disconcertingly fluid manner. Its “torso” rode atop the rippling limbs as smoothly as a hovercraft.

Seven lidless eyes ringed the top of the heptapod’s body. It walked back to the doorway from which it entered, made a brief sputtering sound, and returned to the center of the room followed by another heptapod; at no point did it ever turn around. Eerie, but logical; with eyes on all sides, any direction might as well be “forward.”

Gary had been watching my reaction. “Ready?” he asked.

I took a deep breath. “Ready enough.” I’d done plenty of fieldwork before, in the Amazon, but it had always been a bilingual procedure: either my informants knew some Portuguese, which I could use, or I’d previously gotten an intro to their language from the local missionaries. This would be my first attempt at conducting a true monolingual discovery procedure. It was straightforward enough in theory, though.

I walked up to the looking glass and a heptapod on the other side did the same. The image was so real that my skin crawled. I could see the texture of its gray skin, like corduroy ridges arranged in whorls and loops. There was no smell at all from the looking glass, which somehow made the situation stranger.

I pointed to myself and said slowly, “Human.” Then I pointed to Gary. “Human.” Then I pointed at each heptapod and said, “What are you?”

One of the heptapods pointed to itself with one limb, the four terminal digits pressed together. That was lucky. In some cultures a person pointed with his chin; if the heptapod hadn’t used one of its limbs, I wouldn’t have known what gesture to look for. I heard a brief fluttering sound, and saw a puckered orifice at the top of its body vibrate; it was talking. Then it pointed to its companion and fluttered again.

I went back to my computer; on its screen were two virtually identical spectrographs representing the fluttering sounds. I marked a sample for playback. I pointed to myself and said “Human” again, and did the same with Gary. Then I pointed to the heptapod, and played back the flutter on the speaker.

The heptapod fluttered some more. The second half of the spectrograph for this utterance looked like a repetition: call the previous utterances [flutter1], then this one was [flutter2flutter1].
I pointed at something that might have been a heptapod chair. “What is that?”

The heptapod paused, and then pointed at the “chair” and talked some more. The spectrograph for this differed distinctly from that of the earlier sounds: [flutter3]. Once again, I pointed to the “chair” while playing back [flutter3].

The heptapod replied; judging by the spectrograph, it looked like [flutter3flutter2]. Optimistic interpretation: the heptapod was confirming my utterances as correct, which implied compatibility between heptapod and human patterns of discourse. Pessimistic interpretation: it had a nagging cough.

At my computer I delimited certain sections of the spectrograph and typed in a tentative gloss for each: “heptapod” for [flutter1], “yes” for [flutter2], and “chair” for [flutter3]. Then I typed “Language: Heptapod A” as a heading for all the utterances.

Gary watched what I was typing. “What’s the ‘A’ for?”

“It just distinguishes this language from any other ones the heptapods might use,” I said. He nodded.

“Now let’s try something, just for laughs.” I pointed at each heptapod and tried to mimic the sound of [flutter1], “heptapod.” After a long pause, the first heptapod said something and then the second one said something else, neither of whose spectrographs resembled anything said before. I couldn’t tell if they were speaking to each other or to me since they had no faces to turn. I tried pronouncing [flutter1] again, but there was no reaction.

“Not even close,” I grumbled.

“I’m impressed you can make sounds like that at all,” said Gary.

“You should hear my moose call. Sends them running.”

I tried again a few more times, but neither heptapod responded with anything I could recognize. Only when I replayed the recording of the heptapod’s pronunciation did I get a confirmation; the heptapod replied with [flutter2], “yes.”

“So we’re stuck with using recordings?” asked Gary.

I nodded. “At least temporarily.”

“So now what?”

“Now we make sure it hasn’t actually been saying ‘aren’t they cute’ or ‘look what they’re doing now.’ Then we see if we can identify any of these words when that other heptapod pronounces them.” I gestured for him to have a seat. “Get comfortable; this’ll take a while.”

Thoughtful Reading
By Dave Carver
I bought this book after the story came to my attention from all of the coming attractions on TV now for this movie. I'm glad as the book offers so much more than just the single story. All of The stories are quite thought-provoking.

From the biblical to somewhat steam punk-ish to the ultimate social justice warrior situation, each story captures the imagination. I am only hopeful that the movie Arrival can live up to the story. Enjoy!

Remembering the future
By J. Chambers
Note: This collection of eight short stories by sci-fi author Ted Chiang was originally published as Stories of Your Life. One of the short stories, "Story Of Your Life," is the basis for the motion picture "Arrival," which will be released in the United States on November 11, 2016. I've seen the trailer and read a plot summary of the movie, and it appears that the filmmakers have taken some liberties with the story. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing the film.

Here is my earlier review of Stories of Your Life:
If you've never read any of Ted Chiang's stories, you've missed some of the world's best contemporary science fiction. Stories of Your Life is a remarkable collection of eight stories that were separately published, with several of them winning major awards. The title story, "Story of Your Life," is one of the most original, thought-provoking stories that I've ever read. It's not a casual read, with its mathematical and physics references, but the totally unexpected but logical ending is well worth staying with it. It's definitely my favorite story, but all eight stories are outstanding.

The rabbit is ready to eat....what I liked was that language written is linear and the other beings communicate past and present as a whole. While the interactions with her daughter seemed to already have happened. They would happen.
