Good Introductory Text

My daughter, a Biology major, was assigned this text for a required introductory Humanities course. She was dreading taking the course which she was taking on line. Happily she found this text to be clearly written and lively enough to hold her interest. After completing the first few assignments she related to me, a BA in European History, what she had been reading. I began reading this book and was quite impressed with both the depth of the material and the clarity with which it was being presented. There is a huge time period being covered here (prehistory to the modern day) and, instead of focusing solely on the European experience, also includes, (although not in any great depth) African, Asian and Native American experiences as well. In addition to the well written text there are also numerous illustrations including the expected reproductions of art works but also maps, blueprints and photographs that further enhance the text.

I also felt that the format was well thought out particularly for a student working independently, as in the case of a on line course. At the end of each chapter there is a Timeline that lays out the various high points of the period in question graphically illustrating how these events related to one another. The beginning of each chapter has a listing of the key topics that will be covered. These features, couple with an extensive glossary and index greatly aided in preparing for and taking on line exams.

Overall I felt that this was an excellent text. My daughter, who was initially resistant to the material, found topics that interested her and helped her to 'expand her horizons'. I have been interested in and have studied many of the topics covered over a number of years but also learned much from this text.

Must have textbook for nursing research!

Josette Bettany-Saltikov's textbook How to do a Systematic Literature Review in Nursing is one clinical nurses, graduate and undergraduate research students will want to have at their fingertips. Guiding the reader through the ins and outs of narrative and systematic reviews, as well as clarifying the differences, the author's easy to read style of writing helps the researcher understand the practical use of writing and reading systematic reviews. From novice to expert, all will gain a better understanding of this research instrument.
I am currently using this book in my doctoral course and as I prepare a manuscript. "Helps" that I especially appreciate include: templates throughout the text to walk the reader through the steps of writing a systematic review, choosing primary papers for inclusion in a systematic review, and writing a problem statement . For those of us who struggle with understanding the abstract concepts involved in writing research papers, this is a handbook to own.

Don't waste your time

How did this get so many five star reviews?

Between the spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, and telling, not showing, along with the stilted dialog don't bother reading.

As for the content, this isn't submission, as the title misled me to believe. It's kidnapping. It's rape. It's abuse. And if she falls in love with him at the end, it's not love, it's Stockholm Syndrome. It's also an incredibly inaccurate telling of a tpe or master/slave dynamic. It's also following an unfortunate trend that's running rampant in erotica these days. Enigmatic, wealthy, powerful man meets young, untested girl. Blech.

Also, as a parting note, I couldn't force myself to finish, so maybe the author redeems the story by having the girl escape and press criminal charges. But I'm going to assume that's not going to happen and I'm not wasting any more time to find out.

Frustrating!

I thought I had already read this book at the beginning of the story. It seemed VERY familiar until I got to the abduction and then it became entirely different. I do enjoy good bdsm stories but, be warned, this does NOT portray the bdsm lifestyle but slavery. Is it realistic? I have my doubts. Mary Elizabeth, our h, bemoans her situation but does nothing when she has the opportunity to escape. She loves Devlin, the H, even though he is cruel to her and not at all lovable. It's very apparent Mary Elizabeth has little, if any, self-respect and appreciates any crumbs of affection she is shown.

I probably would have enjoyed this story more if I wasn't so distracted by typos and the misuse of the English language. The words "I seen" were used repeatedly in place of the proper "I saw" and it drove me bonkers! Ms Cane, please hire an editor for your next book. Your readers will thank you for it.

Kept you listening till the end

I listened to the audiobook version of this book

I was caught of guard with the Dom - sub relationship. In my opinion it was not one. It was a dark book that I believe was supposed to be a master-slave relationship? The strangest thing about it though was that he just basically kidnapped her and told her she was now his slave and she just goes along with it? That left me confused as a reader and baffled as a woman. Was there some Stockholm Syndrome going on, low self esteem or a victim to previous abuse? I wish that was looked into more. With everything going on it left you wanting more to see what would happen next. I didn't want to put it down. I really think because of that fact it was too much for me. I have a couple of friends who are into dark erotica as well and they both loved it So it's all just personal preference.
I thought Jennifer Saucedo did an excellent job narrating this book. It's the best of her work that I've listened to from her.

Mike Dowling Acoustic Masterclass

This book and CD when combined with the DVD of the same name will supply a lifetime of material to advance my fingerstyle guitar playing. Mike is an excellent teacher and the songs are progressive in their difficulty. It covers a wide range of playing styles from bottleneck to hybrid and bare finger playing. The alternate tunings are something that did not interest me before, but after using this material it has opened up so many possibilities of guitar playing that I now embrace.In short I loved this course and will be working with it for years.

Terrific

You never like all of the selections on a DVD, but I'm pretty close to 100% on this one. Actually this is one of the best blues guitar teaching DVDs out there, (along with two others by Mr. Dowling) and I have a lot of 'em. The music is great, it's melodic, it's different, and it's a large step up from the usual. Several of these songs, written by Mr. Dowling, really are superb and a joy to play. It helps that he is an excellent teacher and clearly enjoys what he is doing. I have been looking for a way to tell him how much I have appreciated his efforts, and I hope he reads this review.

Excellent Piedmont Book

This is a really good book of Piedmont style blues roots guitar. Not for beginners but if you work at it for a while you'll be able to play some really great tunes. He is an excellent teacher. Awesome style. These are songs your friends are not playing but wish they could. I love it.

An Excellent Reference Book!

I purchased this book as a refresher on the Digital Techniques I learned years ago in the Air Force and through time drifted away from due to changes in job requirements. I am thoroughly impressed! The material is very concise, accurate, and applicable, and also sheds light on the historical aspects of the development of Logic Families. The necessary equations to apply the material to real-world applications are presented and explained in detail, and are easy to find in the text.

The book/author has a website that is quite useful. Not being a student, I wrote to the author to gain access to the "worked problems" for the version of the book I have, and he was very congenial and helpful, providing me with the password and login info necessary to obtain copies of them.

The only drawback was that the software that came with the book (3rd edition) is for a Windows 95 Platform. I am currently in the process of re-building a machine with the Windows 95 OS, as the books software is no longer available, nor is it upgradeable. The other option is to purchase the 4th edition with newer software (which I am contemplating), but be careful to verify the compatibility with your specific machine's OS before doing so. (One could always go back to the tedious "old-school" method of "graphing out the timing", but it is neat if you can do it both ways, and also provides a "check" of your work. The adventure is the best part of the task, yes?!?)

All in all, it is an excellent reference/tutorial book for anyone just learning about Digital Design, as well as an excellent refresher for those like me who have not done any digital designing for several years. The book brought me back up to speed with just two weeks of earnest effort. It also plowed new ground on more up-to-date advances in the field, as well.

I am pleased to have this book in my library.

THE book for starters (& Ref)

I am a CS guy too, and this book was required for the Digital Logic class. I love this book, cause it doesn't have any pre-reqs, and so anyone with an interest can pick it up and will have a good idea as to what digital circuits are all about.
I'm sure that chapter 3, which deals with the analog circuitory isn't very amazing to CS guys, but my prof. insisted on learning that chapter, and I'm happy he did. We all cursed him for teaching us transistors and CMOS logic, but it was well worth it, and I'm happy Wakerly has included it in this book. All you have to do is read every word in Chapter 3, and you'll have a great idea.
The scope of this book is excellent. Taking you from Binary numbers to RAM in one book is quite an achievement and it just flows. Also a good source to pick up VHDL. The diagrams are very clear and easy to understand.
After reading through 3/4ths of this book, I was able to design a few components(different design) by myself without any help.
I would recommend this book highly..And if you're CS, please don't think of Chapter 3 as a waste and skip it.. Cause if you want to get a better understanding and feel for things..you Better read it..I'm happy I was forced to.

About the Author
Since 1998, Leon E. Rosenberg has been a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 1991 to 1998, Rosenberg was Chief Scientific Officer of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company.

During Rosenberg’s 26 year affiliation with Yale, he was the dean of Yale University School of Medicine, research geneticist, clinician, administrator, professor of human genetics, pediatrics, and medicine, and the first chairman of the Department of Human Genetics. Rosenberg and his colleagues conducted pioneering laboratory investigations into the molecular basis of several inherited disorders of amino acid and organic acid metabolism.

Rosenberg received summa cum laude BA and MD degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. Afterward, he moved to Bethesda, Maryland, to begin a six-year association as an investigator with the metabolism service of the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Rosenberg's honors include election to the National Academy of Sciences and to the Institute of Medicine, recipient of the Borden Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics and of the Kober Medal from the Association of American Physicians, and honorary Doctor of Science degrees from the University of Wisconsin and the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. Rosenberg was the medalist for the Australian Society for Medical Research in 2002. He is a past president of the American Society of Human Genetics, the Association of American Physicians, the Funding First Initiative of the Mary Lasker Trust, and the Association of Patient Oriented Research.

Diane Drobnis Rosenberg is the Chief Operating Officer of Meadowgate Farm Alpacas, LLC, in Lawrenceville, NJ. She has been active on numerous boards, including the Foundation for Health in Aging Board for the American Geriatrics Society, the Friends Board of the Institute for Advanced Study, and SAVE, a private Princeton animal shelter.

At companies such as McGraw-Hill, Elsevier Science Publishing, and Williams and Wilkins, Ms. Drobnis Rosenberg acquired and published life sciences books and texts as well as medical journals. In 1990, she started a consulting firm that worked with medical societies on business arrangements for their journals.

Ms. Drobnis Rosenberg was born in Washington, D.C. in 1944 and grew up in Evanston, Illinois. She is an Alumna of Wellesley College where she majored in Biology and also the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied Molecular Biology, having been awarded a NASA traineeship. She has four children and five grandchildren.

A Wonderful Molecular Biology Textbook

Rosenberg's text was by far one of the best core textbooks I've used in a molecular biology class. The book's information is presented in such a way that a varied range of readers--from those who know very little about molecular biology and genetics to those who know quite a bit--can comprehend it. The book emphasizes that as the study of genetics rapidly changes, scientists and non-scientists alike must become knowledgeable in order to be well informed about health care and health care policies. I would not only recommend this text to professors and students but also to any individual interested in learning about the exceptional advances of genetics over the past 30 or so years.

Excellent!

Reading this book was a pleasure. It is personally engaging, thoughtfully organized, and beautifully written. I began with only rudimentary knowledge of genetics, but now have a much more systematic understanding of basic principles, the history and current challenges in this rapidly expanding field, and its significance for human society. The Review Questions at the end of each chapter are very helpful for checking one's readiness to go to the next chapter, and the answers at the end of the book provide concise explanations of concepts.

Not only is this book beautiful, it thoroughly explains a complex subject in an accessible fashion for science and non-science majors alike. What I once thought was over my head is now comprehensible. Instead of distracting the reader, the "art" enhances understanding. Well done!

Helped a great deal

I've been burning for a while but I recently purchased a Nibs Burner that has a lot more burning tips to work with. This book gave me a lot of shading and texturing techniques that made my artwork really come together.

Easy to follow, but majorly outdated.

Let me start by telling you a bit about myself. I've been working with wood for almost 12 years now, though I've only been playing with pyrography for a year or so. I've completed several projects of varying sizes and degrees of detail; my simplest project was a welcome sign and my most detailed one was a plaque of a highly detailed spaceship. As you can see, I'm not an expert, but I'm not a stranger to the craft either.

I paged through this book, but I haven't read it in depth yet. If anything changes afterwards, I'll update my review.

My first impression of this book was...not good. The copyright says 2014, but the actual text was published in 2006, making the information a decade old. Normally that wouldn't be an issue, but the photos of the equipment and even the tips are highly outdated. For instance, the book tells you that many wood burning tools have an adapter that allows you to use other company's tools with their cords. I have three tools myself and have done an extensive amount of shopping and I've literally never seen anything like what they're describing.

Pros:
Value. Ten bucks? That's hard to beat.
Technique. I have to admit, the techniques and patterning shown in the book are fascinating; HOWEVER, because they were done with tips that I don't think even exist anymore, I don't know how easy it will be to replicate them.
Patterns. The book does include several patterns of varying sizes, along with detailed photos and descriptions of the process behind turning a pattern into a burning.

Cons:
Outdated information. As I mentioned, the book was published in 2014 but the original text was first published in 2006, making it ten years old. Tips and tools have changed drastically since then if I compare my own tools to the ones pictured.
Wood is the only material shown. This is a book about 'pyrography' basics, not just wood burning, and I was hoping to see maybe paper or leather or cork projects, but no luck. Everything shown is on birch plywood unless otherwise indicated.
Patterns. Yes, this was in my Pros list as well, but to be fair, the small included patterns are very, very plain and not at all any kind of challenge. In addition, to get the projects to turn out they way they're listed, you have to enlarge most of the patterns, which may be difficult for the less tech-savvy among us.

Final impression: Three stars. I use Walnut Hollow tools and only Walnut Hollow, not because I'm choosy but just because those are the ones I like the best for my budget. I can use some of the technique information, but when I bought this book I expected up-to-date information, a variety of patterns, useful guides to technique, a variety of materials used, and for a decent price. I got three of five (pattern variety, useful techniques, and a good price), so I'm giving three of five stars.

An additional warning: If you are a brand-new, eager-eyed beginner, I would stay away from this book. The technique is wonderful, but the discrepancy between the tools we use today and the old ones shown in the book will make it confusing and difficult for you to know which tips to use.

This book is really just of beginners... but it seems as if it was a chapter pulled out of the authors other book Art & Craft of Pyrography, The: Drawing with Fire on Leather, Gourds, Cloth, Paper, and Wood. I bought both and the first chapter seemed to be the same with a few exceptions... I would only purchase the Drawing with fire on leather.

About the Author

Paul Gamble has worked in high performance sport for over a decade, during which time he has coached elite athletes in an array of sports and at all ages and stages of development. Paul began his career working in professional rugby with English Premiership side London Irish, and has since worked in a range of sports, most recently serving as National Strength & Conditioning Lead for Scottish Squash. He has published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in edited textbooks and has previously written two textbooks as sole author.

Useful resource for team sport S&C practitioners

The second edition of Strength and Conditioning for Team Sports by Paul Gamble is very useful text for team sport practitioners. A major strength of the book is that it is evidence based and relies heavily on published research. Given the increasing amount of published research studies, it is good to have an updated summary of this information across areas that are relevant to strength and conditioning practitioners working in team sports.

The book begins with a general discussion of training principles and assessment and then works through training different physical capacities such as strength, power, agility, metabolic conditioning and speed. There is a heavy emphasis on injury prevention as well as specialised topics such as periodisation and physical preparation for team sports. Throughout the book there are a good range of figures showing different exercises that practitioners might not be familiar with.

Another nice feature of the book is it is written by someone who understands the unique challenges of working in team sport environments and there is some good discussion and suggested solutions for some of these factors such as extended competition seasons, concurrent training etc. The book finishes with some practical examples of training design across some different sports that should give practitioners a good starting point for design of their own training programs for team sports.

This text is very dense with research supported information. The author included an abundance of current and relevant research that you won't see in many of the "traditional" texts.This is not a manual or a "how to" book that provides cookie cutter programs. Rather, it provides the science and theory behind sports training.

Overall, a good resource of information pertaining to S&C for team sports.

Objective and practical

Scientific research articles on any subject are often difficult to read and the conclusions are hard to put into practice. Paul Gamble has done his research brilliantly and made it palatable, objective and practical. Despite the higher price, an excellent purchase and a read and a definite must have for a strength and conditioning coach working with team sports.

I chose this book because I thought it would deal clearly with the history of colors, but I found it had a lot of Italian rhetoric to it and was not very well translated (admittedly a challenge).
