One big discrepancy found, but otherwise there is helpful stuff here.

I found a discrepancy in this text with respect to citing electronic journal articles in one's reference/bibliography section. In this book, I cannot tell if the volume or issue number of the journal is supposed to be listed, but in a quick style guide for ASA that I found online, it instructs to list both: the volume number after the journal publication, with the issue number following in parentheses. The main prof in the sociology department at my school assigned this text, so either he defers to its instruction, or he didn't catch my omission of the issue number in my reference sections in any of my papers. It would also be nice to have a brief description of the required info, with respect to citing electronic journals, as there is with respect to citing texts, etc, because the example given is ultimately ambiguous. Still, this book got me through college, and I appreciate it.

About the Author

Edmund R. Burke, PhD, wrote or edited 11 books on health, fitness, and cycling, including High-Tech Cycling and Fitness Cycling. Renowned for translating the latest scientific research into practical application, he served as the executive editor of Cycling Science and was a columnist for Adventure Cycling, Active.com, and Performance Conditioning for Cycling. He also wrote extensively on cycling physiology, training, nutrition, health, and fitness for Velonews, Bicycling, Winning Magazine, MTB Magazine, and NORBA News.

Dr. Burke was the physiologist for USA Cycling for seven years. During that time he worked with the 1980 and 1984 Olympic cycling teams, which won nine medals. He consulted with several companies in the areas of cycling, fitness equipment design, nutritional products, and fitness programs. A fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, he served as the vice president of research for the National Strength and Conditioning Association from 1993 to 1995.

Dr. Burke held a doctorate in exercise physiology from Ohio State University. He was a professor and director of the exercise science program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, where he lived with his wife, Kathleen. Dr. Burke passed away in 2002.

Good info on training for competition not on tactics.

A big question for me when buying my first book on training for racing, was "Who provides the most reliable and important information?" I have seen Dr. Burke quoted in a variety of sources including Bicycling magazine, Velo magazine, and Chris Carmichael's web site. So I had the impression he is respected in the sport. Further, when reading his writings in other sources, he has gone into the underlying physiological processes that contribute to one's performance on a bike. As such, I decided to purchase his book based on his apparent credibility and the depth of information he provides. Strengths of his book include its excellent coverage of what goes into training for competitive cycling. From beginning "base training" to sprint training, periodization, and planning one's training for the entire year. He also speaks at length on nutrition, equipment/rider aerodynamics, body positioning on the bike, and adjunct training methods. Again, there is an emphasis on underlying physiological processes including some discussion of relevant research. I would say the book's weaknesses lie with it's failure to address racing tactics. Certainly, you learn about what is happening with the body at race pace, but this book will not tell you about positioning for a sprint or pacing one's self for a time trial.
In short, buy this book if you are serious about racing and want to enhance your knowledge of what goes into training for competition. Don't buy this book if you want to learn about tactics.

I won't leave home without this one !!!

Very detailed, I found "serious cycling" easy and enjoyable to read. Ideal for the self - coached athlete, it helps personalize your cycling program depending on your present abilities. While reading you find that there is much more to training and becoming a better rider then you first thought, but it puts the "why" into training in addition to the "how" giving a better understanding and appreciation with what changes your body must undergo to be a better cyclist.
Periodization, training modes, keeping diaries and more... The nutrition section I found to be a little "old school" but, nevertheless, interesting and backed by studies. This information is aimed at the "serious cyclist" and may be too much for someone not willing to put forth the 15+ hours a week.

detailed, very serious and technical tome

Burke, a well known name among cyclists, gives very detailed and sometimes complicated advice about how to train, how to create a training schedule for various goals, how and why to make a training diary, etc. Readers should be aware that his advice is aimed at the very serious cyclist, and his training schedules range from those for serious collegiate cyclists (~15hrs/week) to professionals (~25+ hrs/week). His advice is sound, but it may be more than most people really need. His peak mileage (feb) is 2000miles--that's 500 miles per week!

Great content but difficult to read

Dr Thalheim is a frequent contributor of technical papers and a frequent editor of conference papers. This helps explain the large number of database design issues addressed in this book. If you can get through the material, this book will definitely help you build better databases. The book actually serves as a survey of academic work on database design due to the amount of topics covered, though it isn't intended for that purpose.

The downside of the book is its lack of cohesion. The book does follow a typical sequence of presenting a "new" design methodology, defining the methodology, and finally applying designs using the methodology to physical designs. However, Thalheim frequently "stops" along the way to dive deeply into some technical detail. He often doesn't give the reader warning of this either. I found myself adding headings and outline numbers to the paragraphs so I could follow the train of thought of the chapter or section. Generally, these outline numbers would get down to six levels in some sections of a chapter but only one or two levels in the remaining text of the chapter.

This book is now one of two database design books I tend to re-read every six months or so. The other is Date's "An Introduction to Database Systems".

A uniquely critical technology for modern medicine

A well-founded research based textbook on the medical science, techniques, and varied applications of hyperbaric medical treatments ("HBO"). Written for specialists, clinicians and students.
This is a seminal textbook for understanding the medical and scientific facts of hyperbaric medicine, as well as implementing hyperbaric medical technologies to patient care. HBO has widely varied disease and condition applications with a commonality of pressure technology.
Medical Economics
In the modern world of medical economics, HBO can save Third Party Payers significant costs on patient treatments while delivering significantly improved outcomes and quality of life.
HBO is one of those medical sub-specialties that is left behind by the biases of modern medical economics and science. Modern medicine is primarily based on pharmaceutical economics. Significant research investments are powered by the manufacturing and distribution economics of successful drugs. This is a great and tremendous system, delivering research, understanding and successful treatments that unquestionably alleviate disease and conditions on a broad basis. But, this system is not perfect and is not without isolated failings.
HBOT cannot be packaged into a pill, has minimal manufacturing economies, and high ongoing service costs and high overhead, while associated with nominal patient volumes, and nominal billing rates. These economics have long held back this very promising technology (HBO) and its successful applications. Further, double blind studies are virtually impossible - patients perceive pressure changes, or lack thereof, technicians are required to implement pressurization, and oxygen delivery systems may not be able to deliver less than 100% oxygen.
Ironically, HBO can power pharmaceutical and surgical applications to higher levels of treatment success bringing cures where partial successes were the norms. (Chapters 9, 13 14, 15, 23, 24, 27, 33).
Controversially, HBO has demonstrated good clinical success on incurable diseases and conditions, including Crones Disease, stroke, CP, MS, and others. While modern medicine debates the etiologies and optimal treatment protocols, curative HBO applications can be given today. These applications (esp. Crones, and MS) can further illuminate etiologies therefore, furthering and accelerating alternative and supportive therapies.
HBOT supports diabetic wound healing, preventing amputations; enhances infectious disease therapies, saving lives and reducing hospital stays; is used for various poisonings; can provide accelerated surgical recoveries (up to 30-40% faster); and can ameliorate strokes and brain injuries by up to 40% when applied within 4 hours of injury.
Medical Physics
Simply, under pressure, oxygen dissolves in blood serum, and therefore can diffuse to poorly supported disease areas, or injuries. Further, HBO acts as an immuno-suppressant, relieving acutely injured tissues of oedema, preventing further injuries (if applied on a timely basis), as well as supporting the natural healing process.
Angiogenesis occurs within 15 - 20 minutes of HBO. It is not known if angiogenesis is initiated by the increased pressure effects, or by the oxygen dissolved in the serum. However, angiogenesis is felt to be a factor supporting accelerated healing in injuries, chronic wounds, and surgical recoveries. Further, little is known about these growth factors and their involvement with healing.
Neurological Applications
The chapters on neurological applications are some of the most significant in this text and should be required reading for all neurologists because they hold the greatest single promise to modern healthcare. These chapters are steeped with extensive (and largely ignored) animal and human research papers, extensive clinical studies with supportive SPECT scans and associated clinical outcomes.
The brain remains the final frontier of science and brain injuries are the most destructive and expensive to society (#1 killer of children and teenagers, #1 birth defect, #2 killer for adults).
We do not understand the brain's response to injury, or disease, much less detail its response to treatments and recoveries. But, we can accept the overwhelming clinical observations made by trained physicians world-wide of positive outcomes to HBO when applied to brain injuries, and cerebral palsy patients.
Hopefully, one day we will be able to manufacture a drug, or drug regimen that can replace HBO treatments for brain injuries. However, that day is probably 50 years from today. Therefore, today, we need to apply HBO to brain injuries, note the clinical outcomes, optimize the treatments, and develop ancillary supportive therapies.
Diagnostic Imaging is propelling objective clinical research for neurological applications of HBO by demonstrating underlying metabolic activity changes in brain tissues with HBO. Clinical observations significantly correlate with SPECT scan changes. (SPECT using HMPAO have become the scan of choice.) Chapter 18 written by Dr.'s Neubauer and Harch provide an excellent foundation for understanding and support for using HBO for brain injuries and CP.

Great resource

I recently started a small hyperbaric clinic, and am at the beginning of a steep learning curve relative to HBOT. This book has helped me and others I come in contact with understand treatment and treatment issues for many of the conditions that hyperbarics is currently being utilized. The chapters on specific conditions are thorough, well-annotated, and specific. This is the first place I go for information. I'm grateful this is updated periodically as the research base in growing rapidly. I highly recommend this book. Don't be deterred by the price, it's worth it.

Kurke re-creates a "language of metals" by analyzing the stories and practices associated with coinage in texts ranging from Herodotus and archaic poetry to Aristotle and Attic inscriptions. She shows that a wide variety of imagery and terms fall into two opposing symbolic domains: the city, representing egalitarian order, and the elite symposium, a kind of anti-city. Exploring the tensions between these domains, Kurke excavates a neglected portion of the Greek cultural "imaginary" in all its specificity and strangeness.

One can only imagine what a dinner at one of his tables would be like. The china is amazing and the mixing and matching of colored glassware inspiring. I wish there had been more on his silver collection, but the dishware was enough. So beautiful and filled with ideas to make everyday dining fun.

I love to use different table settings at my annual holiday sit-down dinner and this book gave me some ideas. However, a lot of it was way over the top. I tend to think that the food is the star of a dinner and I avoid too much clutter and colored tablecloths for my table.

After injuries terminated his pro-baseball career, Pete went into coaching, while simultaneously building recreational facilities in California and Arizona. Pete has built and operated numerous tennis clubs, golf courses, country clubs and indoor athletic facilities. His efforts garnered the attention of Howard Hughes and many others.

Perhaps some of the more interesting aspects of Pete's story are the famous people you will encounter in the book. I really enjoyed this book. I picked it up because I had been reading all of Maeve Binchy's novels and I was rapidly running out of them. This book was on a display table with some of Maeve Binchy's work at the bookstore, because they are both contemporary Irish women authors. I found thir writing styles similar, and I found myself really engrossed in this novel by the end. I would recommend it for anyone who has read Binchy and enjoyed her, and I am pleased to have found another Irish author that I can enjoy as much. I am currently reading another one of her novels and I plan to read them all. It is satisfying escapist literature at it's best.

I have read many of the author's books, but I think this one is the best I have read so far. The characters are well written and you can feel your feelings for the characters change throughout the book. The novel ties in the thoughts of all sides and you feel more as though the situations are real, and you are a friend hearing about it first hand. Great chick lit read!

Review of "This Present Triumph"

Ephesians is a basic and yet critical book both for the life of the New Testament Church and Christian. Thus, we remain indebted to and thankful for new scholarly insights that assist us in approaching this important book in a fresh way. Dr. Richard Cozart, has provided such a treatment in his recently published work on Ephesians, which contains the fruit of his doctoral research and writing at the University of Wales. Here, Cozart notes the connection between the Isaianic New Exodus motif and Ephesians’ focus on the present triumph of the people of God. Cozart also furnishes important clues for properly interpreting the “Armor of God” found in Ephesians 6. Rather than rummaging through the entire canon to define the pieces of armor as do many commentators, he carefully defines the various pieces of armor based upon how Paul uses the same word, words, or concepts earlier in his letter. While such an approach seems to be common sense, Cozart’s material is the first that I have seen that clearly articulates this proposition. Cozart combines his rich experience as a counselor, pastor, professor, and scholar to keep the body of Christ up to date on the latest perspectives in the Book of Ephesians. My hope and prayer is that this book will be added to the personal libraries of pastor and scholar alike as well as all interested laymen.

A better way of reading Ephesians

Richard Cozart has brought a completely new way of understanding Paul's letter to the Ephesians. He explores the place of exodus and paschal sacrifice imagery and identifies themes that other commentators on the letter have missed. I cannot see how any future research on this letter can ignore the conclusions of this work and would encourage all researchers, pastors and serious readers of the NT to become acquainted with its powerful arguments. It is too important to be ignored!
