Good Introductory Text

My daughter, a Biology major, was assigned this text for a required introductory Humanities course. She was dreading taking the course which she was taking on line. Happily she found this text to be clearly written and lively enough to hold her interest. After completing the first few assignments she related to me, a BA in European History, what she had been reading. I began reading this book and was quite impressed with both the depth of the material and the clarity with which it was being presented. There is a huge time period being covered here (prehistory to the modern day) and, instead of focusing solely on the European experience, also includes, (although not in any great depth) African, Asian and Native American experiences as well. In addition to the well written text there are also numerous illustrations including the expected reproductions of art works but also maps, blueprints and photographs that further enhance the text.

I also felt that the format was well thought out particularly for a student working independently, as in the case of a on line course. At the end of each chapter there is a Timeline that lays out the various high points of the period in question graphically illustrating how these events related to one another. The beginning of each chapter has a listing of the key topics that will be covered. These features, couple with an extensive glossary and index greatly aided in preparing for and taking on line exams.

Overall I felt that this was an excellent text. My daughter, who was initially resistant to the material, found topics that interested her and helped her to 'expand her horizons'. I have been interested in and have studied many of the topics covered over a number of years but also learned much from this text.

Must have textbook for nursing research!

Josette Bettany-Saltikov's textbook How to do a Systematic Literature Review in Nursing is one clinical nurses, graduate and undergraduate research students will want to have at their fingertips. Guiding the reader through the ins and outs of narrative and systematic reviews, as well as clarifying the differences, the author's easy to read style of writing helps the researcher understand the practical use of writing and reading systematic reviews. From novice to expert, all will gain a better understanding of this research instrument.
I am currently using this book in my doctoral course and as I prepare a manuscript. "Helps" that I especially appreciate include: templates throughout the text to walk the reader through the steps of writing a systematic review, choosing primary papers for inclusion in a systematic review, and writing a problem statement . For those of us who struggle with understanding the abstract concepts involved in writing research papers, this is a handbook to own.

Don't waste your time

How did this get so many five star reviews?

Between the spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, and telling, not showing, along with the stilted dialog don't bother reading.

As for the content, this isn't submission, as the title misled me to believe. It's kidnapping. It's rape. It's abuse. And if she falls in love with him at the end, it's not love, it's Stockholm Syndrome. It's also an incredibly inaccurate telling of a tpe or master/slave dynamic. It's also following an unfortunate trend that's running rampant in erotica these days. Enigmatic, wealthy, powerful man meets young, untested girl. Blech.

Also, as a parting note, I couldn't force myself to finish, so maybe the author redeems the story by having the girl escape and press criminal charges. But I'm going to assume that's not going to happen and I'm not wasting any more time to find out.

Frustrating!

I thought I had already read this book at the beginning of the story. It seemed VERY familiar until I got to the abduction and then it became entirely different. I do enjoy good bdsm stories but, be warned, this does NOT portray the bdsm lifestyle but slavery. Is it realistic? I have my doubts. Mary Elizabeth, our h, bemoans her situation but does nothing when she has the opportunity to escape. She loves Devlin, the H, even though he is cruel to her and not at all lovable. It's very apparent Mary Elizabeth has little, if any, self-respect and appreciates any crumbs of affection she is shown.

I probably would have enjoyed this story more if I wasn't so distracted by typos and the misuse of the English language. The words "I seen" were used repeatedly in place of the proper "I saw" and it drove me bonkers! Ms Cane, please hire an editor for your next book. Your readers will thank you for it.

Kept you listening till the end

I listened to the audiobook version of this book

I was caught of guard with the Dom - sub relationship. In my opinion it was not one. It was a dark book that I believe was supposed to be a master-slave relationship? The strangest thing about it though was that he just basically kidnapped her and told her she was now his slave and she just goes along with it? That left me confused as a reader and baffled as a woman. Was there some Stockholm Syndrome going on, low self esteem or a victim to previous abuse? I wish that was looked into more. With everything going on it left you wanting more to see what would happen next. I didn't want to put it down. I really think because of that fact it was too much for me. I have a couple of friends who are into dark erotica as well and they both loved it So it's all just personal preference.
I thought Jennifer Saucedo did an excellent job narrating this book. It's the best of her work that I've listened to from her.

Mike Dowling Acoustic Masterclass

This book and CD when combined with the DVD of the same name will supply a lifetime of material to advance my fingerstyle guitar playing. Mike is an excellent teacher and the songs are progressive in their difficulty. It covers a wide range of playing styles from bottleneck to hybrid and bare finger playing. The alternate tunings are something that did not interest me before, but after using this material it has opened up so many possibilities of guitar playing that I now embrace.In short I loved this course and will be working with it for years.

Terrific

You never like all of the selections on a DVD, but I'm pretty close to 100% on this one. Actually this is one of the best blues guitar teaching DVDs out there, (along with two others by Mr. Dowling) and I have a lot of 'em. The music is great, it's melodic, it's different, and it's a large step up from the usual. Several of these songs, written by Mr. Dowling, really are superb and a joy to play. It helps that he is an excellent teacher and clearly enjoys what he is doing. I have been looking for a way to tell him how much I have appreciated his efforts, and I hope he reads this review.

Excellent Piedmont Book

This is a really good book of Piedmont style blues roots guitar. Not for beginners but if you work at it for a while you'll be able to play some really great tunes. He is an excellent teacher. Awesome style. These are songs your friends are not playing but wish they could. I love it.

An Excellent Reference Book!

I purchased this book as a refresher on the Digital Techniques I learned years ago in the Air Force and through time drifted away from due to changes in job requirements. I am thoroughly impressed! The material is very concise, accurate, and applicable, and also sheds light on the historical aspects of the development of Logic Families. The necessary equations to apply the material to real-world applications are presented and explained in detail, and are easy to find in the text.

The book/author has a website that is quite useful. Not being a student, I wrote to the author to gain access to the "worked problems" for the version of the book I have, and he was very congenial and helpful, providing me with the password and login info necessary to obtain copies of them.

The only drawback was that the software that came with the book (3rd edition) is for a Windows 95 Platform. I am currently in the process of re-building a machine with the Windows 95 OS, as the books software is no longer available, nor is it upgradeable. The other option is to purchase the 4th edition with newer software (which I am contemplating), but be careful to verify the compatibility with your specific machine's OS before doing so. (One could always go back to the tedious "old-school" method of "graphing out the timing", but it is neat if you can do it both ways, and also provides a "check" of your work. The adventure is the best part of the task, yes?!?)

All in all, it is an excellent reference/tutorial book for anyone just learning about Digital Design, as well as an excellent refresher for those like me who have not done any digital designing for several years. The book brought me back up to speed with just two weeks of earnest effort. It also plowed new ground on more up-to-date advances in the field, as well.

I am pleased to have this book in my library.

THE book for starters (& Ref)

I am a CS guy too, and this book was required for the Digital Logic class. I love this book, cause it doesn't have any pre-reqs, and so anyone with an interest can pick it up and will have a good idea as to what digital circuits are all about.
I'm sure that chapter 3, which deals with the analog circuitory isn't very amazing to CS guys, but my prof. insisted on learning that chapter, and I'm happy he did. We all cursed him for teaching us transistors and CMOS logic, but it was well worth it, and I'm happy Wakerly has included it in this book. All you have to do is read every word in Chapter 3, and you'll have a great idea.
The scope of this book is excellent. Taking you from Binary numbers to RAM in one book is quite an achievement and it just flows. Also a good source to pick up VHDL. The diagrams are very clear and easy to understand.
After reading through 3/4ths of this book, I was able to design a few components(different design) by myself without any help.
I would recommend this book highly..And if you're CS, please don't think of Chapter 3 as a waste and skip it.. Cause if you want to get a better understanding and feel for things..you Better read it..I'm happy I was forced to.
