A beautiful collection of short stories which contains great depth and facilitates multiple readings to allow oneself to discover all the intricacies and subtleties in her work. With themes ranging from the pure elation of childhood innocence and joy which elicit true nostalgia to the heavy themes and choices one must make and confront as one gets older and a wide variety in between, the collection of stories can resonate with a diverse audience and connect to a plethora of personalities and interests. It requires a great amount of detail and an astute touch to be able to bring about so much depth in so few words and she does so masterfully. I am looking forward to future works she produces.

Delightfully accomplished!

Ms Nande's beautifully composed vignettes creep into your imagination like seeds, where they blossom into a rich forest of full-blown stories. She captures moments, snatches of memories, and turns them over gently with her delicate prose; she runs her fingers over them, tracing the edges of pain, grief and loss; then she twists them in the light, and they shimmer and sparkle with joy and delight.

How do we love this man?

Never in my life do I remember being so captured by by a series.All of the books have kept me reading.I have new glasses and can barely see to read, I'll need to have them tested by another Dr.But back to the books,I saw the first movie in the197os,didn't' read another book of his for 20 years! I had to read the book and found out what I had been missing.Thank the powers that be. Elizabeth Loudon.

Scientific and mundane awe -- An excellent book!

2061 is one of my favorite science fiction books. I love the way it goes into technical detail. (If you know of science fiction that has more technical detail, please e-mail it to me!)
This book had potential to degenerate into a horror book. It didn't take that route, and for me that made it more eerie. You need to suspend disbelief for this book. In real life humankind has not had any widely observed direct evidence of extraterrestrial life or a "creator". In this book series, humanity finds such evidence... when Jupiter becomes a small star and the Discovery's computer sends a mysterious message calling for humans to make peace and granting humans permission to explore the solar system with the exception of Europa-- no other commandments or explanations. Humankind knows it's powerless against something that could create a star, and so it obeys the monolith's laconic directives.
Imagine the scene at the end of the movie 2010. We are shown that Euopa is changing thanks to Jupiter having been turned into a sun. We see water an plant life. In the distance we hear movement. Could animal life have developed? Although it looks like a swamp, we know the atmosphere is mostly methane-- the environment is nothing like anything on Earth. Then we see the monolith silently towering over the swamp, influencing it perhaps as it influenced Earth a billion years ago. Now for 50 years human kind has diffidently avoided Europa. There has been no further activity associated with the monolith. They have tired to observe from a distance, but clouds of vapor resulting from the heat of Jupiter obscure Europa most of the time. Humans are getting more and more daring about how close to Europa they venture. In this book, humans decide to risk sending down a probe. While they're launching the probe, a hijacking forces them to land on this forbidden planet. The stranded researchers focus on staying alive and cautiously exploring Europa while they are waiting for a rescue. They come in contact with many natural phenomena and one supernatural phenomenon.
If you can imagine contact with something as powerful and laconic as the monolith appearing and you can imagine the awesome temptation to study it while trying to remain as dispassionate as possible, you will really enjoy this book.

Arthur Clarke was one of the outstanding Science Fiction writers ever. You are there in his writing experiencing what the character's experienced. This is third book of the 2001 series - 2001 Space Odyssey, 2010 The Year We Make Contact, 2061 Odyssey Three, and 3001 Final Odyssey. I have them all.

A good historic romance anthology

This anthology contains three novellas:

Susan Johnson: As you wish
England, 18th century
The young Earl of Albion is mostly interested in horses, sex and betting - in that order. When he makes a drunken bet to seduce Felicity Belvoid, a virgin from a wealthy noble family, he's in for a surprise: Felicity is quite willing to oblige if he agrees to take her to her aunt in Edinburgh afterwards. As it turns out, her nasty stepmother wants to marry her off to a rich old man. Both are pleased to find out that they really enjoy each other in and out of bed, since Felicity is also a horse lover. But things become difficult when the two are caught and confronted by both sets of parents...
What I liked about this Regency story was the sense of humour. What I didn't like so much was the excess of sex scenes which were sometimes way over the top. A good read, but not great.

Terri Brisbin: A storm of love
Scotland, 11th century
When Breac sees a woman almost beaten to death, he saves her and takes her with him to his home village. As it turns out, Aigneis was divorced and banished by her husband because she didn't give him children. She and Breac soon feel attracted to each other, but Aigneis has a secret she is afraid might drive Breac away...
This is a moving romance with a paranormal element and likeable, convincing characters. It can be read on its own, but is part of the author's Storm-series.

Mary Wine: Stealing the bride
Scotland, 16th century
Hayden Monroe lost his wife and children to a fever. Now he has to marry again but is less than happy with the negotiations for a bride. When a neighbouring laird offers his headstrong sister for a handfasting, he agrees to meet her. While she's insulted at the idea of not being married properly, she soon feels attracted to Hayden. He feels the same. But then she's kidnapped for ransom...
I really liked the characters, especially Hayden who had a lot more depth than usual for male heroes in historic romances. I felt that the story lost a bit of its focus when secondary characters were introruced during the kidnapping. The author obviously plans to write another story about them, but it took away from this story. Apart from that it's really good.

All in all, this is an above average anthology. It's relatively erotic, in Johnson's case maybe too much so, but with well developed characters and in the case of Brisbin and Wine also good plots.

On a different note: I wish this publisher didn't publish so many trade paperbacks instead of smaller paperbacks. They are a lot more expensive and take of much more room on the shelf. I guess they can make more money for the same book. Since it's usually just the trade paperback without a later small paperback publication, you don't have much of a choice if you like an author (in my case Mary Wine), but I'm less than happy with that policy. This doesn't take away from the quality of this book, but it's less than ideal to me.

AS YOU WISH by Susan Johnson

Virgin Felicity Belvoir is well thought of and is able to make even the hardest of heart like her. Men find her irresistible but are too much aware of her to take her virginity. It's a good thing the Earl of Albion isn't as reserved - he plans to take her virginity. And if rumors are true, Felicity is looking forward to every single risqué moment.

Felicity is a lovely woman. She has style and grace. Her peers love her - she is everything the jaded Earl of Albion needs, even if he is too stubborn to see what is in front of his face. I adore when the intentions of the hero doesn't happen as he planned!

A STORM OF LOVE by Terri Brisbin

Breac is on his way home after searching for a healer to give him herbs to help his dying sister. As he rests for the night, he is awakened by two men throwing a bundle off of a horse. The bundle moves, and Breac is surprised to see a trussed up and very much naked woman inside. Realizing the men mean to kill her, Breac stops them by promising to make her his slave.

Terri Brisbin pleasantly surprised me with A STORM OF LOVE. With drama, flair, and sensuous love scenes, I was unable to do anything other than fall in love with this spirited story. Ms. Brisbin's characters were enchanting!

STEALING THE BRIDE by Mary Wine

Hayden Monroe needs a wife in the worst way. As laird of his clan, Hayden knows his responsibilities. And finding a wife is a priority. Hayden finds the woman he desires in Elspeth Leask. She is a beauty, and Hayden is looking forward to bedding and then wedding this lovely lady.

I am certain that no one other than Mary Wine can tell a Scottish romance with such enticing words. STEALING THE BRIDE has just the right combination of sensuality and sexuality needed to bring Hayden and Elspeth alive.

UNDONE is a great anthology by three extremely talented authors. There is simply no way I could pick a favorite so I am not going to even try. Just know that each story will grab you and keep you warm and toasty as you read. Or, like me, it might make you sweat and shiver with anticipation!

Undone...has done it again.

I LOVE these books where multiple authors give a little story. I call them "teasers", as each one just makes you want to know more of the story, and read more from each author! These tales take you from a first-time lover, to a younger man, older woman scenario, and onto a semi-reluctant bride with a temperamental and picky mind! All three stories touch at least one emotion in every womans heart, and you cant help but be swept away. This is how I became addicted to Susan Johnson, and now I gobble all her stories up! Each tale has it's own sweet ending, and you read each page just waiting for the next exciting line! Truly a great book for quick readers, and those that just want a selection of fast, hot, and heavy, all with a great story line!

Rad Physics for dummies

Radiation oncologists are typically give Khan's book as the bible for physics study for the boards. The problem with Khan is that its dense, turgid prose presumes a background in physics. Most of us aren't Phds in the field. Johns and Cunningham is worse in that it may as well be the text towards getting you that PhD.

Mind you, you'll still need Khan around to fill in someblanks.This book is particularly thin on brachy and radioisotopes. But this book touches upon all the topics you need to know. It is an excellent primer for the average radonc resident looking to get the concepts and formulations behind rad physics, to pass the boards, and ultimately, to hire her own physicist for the clinic.

A Scholarly Dhammapada

The Dhammapada is a deeply-inspiring religious text and the best-known work of the Theravada Buddhist canon. It consists of 423 short verses arranged in 26 chapters which cover, in brief form, the major aspects of the Buddha's teachings from the most mundane to the deepest. About 25 percent of the verses appear elsewhere in the Theravada Buddhist canon. In many Buddhist countries, children memorize this text which has much to teach both the learned and the simple. In its combination of simplicity and depth, the closest analogue to the Dhammapada in the Jewish-Christian Scriptures is the book of Psalms.

The Dhammapada has been well-served by many excellent translations. The translation under review here, by John Ross Carter, Professor of Philosophy at Colgate University, and Mahinda Palhawandana, Professer of Sanskrit Emeritus in Sri Lanka, is unique in its care and in the scope of its learning. In addition to the text, this translation includes line-by-line translations of the earliest Sri Lankan commentaries on the Dhammapada. These commentaries were written over the course of many centuries and systematized in about 1000 A.D. There is a separate and later series of commentaries on the text in which stories were written to illustrate the events that gave rise to the Buddha's utterance of each verse. These stories are not included here, but they are summarized in another well-known translation of the Dhammapada by the monk Narada, which I shall mention below.

This edition begins with a scholarly introduction to the text and the commentaries followed by an English rendition of the text of the Dhammapada without commentary. The next section of the book repeats the English translation together with the Pali text with the addition of the extensive commentary. Each chapter is arranged in accordance with the commentarial arrangement in which some verses are considered singly and others are combined in groups. Following the translation of text and commentary, there is a series of notes. Some of these notes deal with points of grammar while others describe in detail points of Buddhist teaching to illuminate the text and commentary.

The goal of this detailed presentation is to make the Dhammapada and its ancient interpretations available so that the interested reader may study the text with his or her own eyes. As Carter and Palihawanana state in their introduction (p. 9):

"It was our endeavor to make this work as much as possible a 'stitching of the centuries'. What this reveals is on the one hand the prodoundly evocative power of the religious sentiments expressed in the text, and on the other the conservatism of the tradition that interprets the text as we see in these documents. ... But from the way we set about it, what is of singular importance is the arrangement of this book: presenting the text itself as a text and presenting the history of its study in the setting of a growing tradition of interpretation....We wanted to make the text, as something in human hands, to point forward from the past through present into the future."

I want to give two brief examples from the translation. First, verse 183 of the Dhammapada is universally regarded as offering the shortest, most basic statement of the Buddha's teaching. Here it is in Carter and Palihawadana:

"Refraining from all that is detrimental,

The attainment of what is wholesome,

The purification of one's mind:

This is the instruction of Awakened Ones."

Note how the translation avoids the use of the word "bad" in line one and "good" in line two. Many might question this. But the point of this translation is to avoid the theistic connotations many Western readers will bring to the words "good" and "bad". Also note the term "Awakened Ones" in the final line rather than the more literal and traditional translation, "all the Buddhas". The difference points in the direction of universalizing the teaching rather than, perhaps, limiting it by sectarianism.

I want to look briefly at verse 1 of the Dhammapada which is basic to much of what follows in the text. It is also perhaps the most difficult verse in the work. Here it is in Carter and Palihawadana:

"Preceded by perception are mental states,

For them is perception supreme,

From perception have they sprung.

If, with perception polluted, one speaks or acts,

Thence suffering follows

As a wheel the draught ox's foot."

Most translation of verse 1 speak in terms of "the mind." Thus, Narada translates the beginning of the verse: "Mind is the forerunner of (all evil) states. Mind is chief: mind-made are they." ... Carter and Palihawadana try to present the text in a way that will not encourage the Western reader to equate it with the idealism of Plato or Berkeley. The verse remains a difficult and deep teaching on any reading.

I have the good fortune to participate in a Sutta Study Group where we read the Dhammapada chapter-by-chapter over the course of about one year. We used Carter and Palihawadana together with several other translations, as we discussed and debated and tried to understand the Dhammapada together.

The reader may not by lucky enough to have access to such a group, but the Dhammapada is a work that will reward individual study at any level. Some readers may find Carter and Palihawandana more than they need to begin. But for those wanting to make a detailed study of this great text, this work is invaluable.

Sadly, a too-highly (!) condensed version of the famed scholarly translation

FAIR WARNING: This book of 112 pages is NOT the same as the book that has received praise for its scholarly and careful commentary!

This abbreviated version does not have the footnotes and the explanation of Pali terms which the expanded, 500+ page version has.

Please do NOT purchase this abbreviated version if you expect to use it as a reference version to help you understand the Pali text. Someone should feel ashamed of themselves in selling this abbreviated version to those expecting the original, without noting the helpful scholarly commentaries are gone. It was like being very disappointed in an old friend.
I know one person who ordered this text assuming it was the expanded version after I had recommended this translation -- she was very disappointed and so was I. Unfortunately, if you want to purchase the old expanded version, you may have to pay top dollar for a used copy.

Fine translation

I have previously read classic Max Muller's version and some translations foud at numerous web-pages. I think this is clearly
the best of them. Carter and Palihawadana have retained texts lyric style but still their ambition is to bring autentic text as such to us. Hence reader have to use glossary where most importánt words and referensees are. I may be a bit annoying but
If you really want know exactly what what is in original dhammapada you has to use such method. Some at web "intreprete"
too much, then the text may look easier but It may go also wrong.
Only negative comment is that people to which english is not native language, text may have too mamy many fine but unfamiliar words. I recommend this book. It is one of the classics of Worlds religious teachings.

Nice Step up from Spin, great for program interfacing

This is not a book of hundreds of propeller projects, but is the one and ONLY book that bridges between the amazing power of Parallax's multicore propeller platform, your PC, and higher languages, with a LOT of detail. If you're getting into propeller, by all means download all the many free guides, sheets, etc. from Parallax's website (they are an extremely customer friendly group and believers in open source on the code side), and buy their own official book on propeller too (see below). BUT-- after getting the spin book too, your next step will be wondering how to actually PROGRAM the propeller, not in its "native" assembly like language (SPIN), but a compiled language like BASIC. THIS is that book.

If you know Parallax, you know their many other projects, robotics, processors, etc. are already all BASIC ready. So why an assembly level language for this chip? Precisely because MULTIPROCESSOR programming is fraught with potholes, like race conditions and other nasties. BUT if you're in the real world, even as a hobbyist, you've got to be itching to try a real life multiprocessor, and ONLY Parallax offers this wonderful chip for inventors and do it yourself engineers at a reasonable price, and even with their own development board if you'd like more than just the chip (the Parallax P8X32A quickstart multicore development board, part number 40000RT-- Parallax 32111 PROPELLER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BOARD ).

What does "interfacing" mean in the title? You'll love this part-- in addition to specifics on propeller, the book has deep and detailed tips on connecting ANY processor, using propeller as an example, to your PC-- including controlling drives, ports, etc. Of course to do so, and actually use the connections, you need a GUI on the chip side, which the book also steps you through, with example code. Have an old PC sitting around? Time to dust off the mother board and ROCK. This combination will allow you to use the propeller like the PC's processors -- only WITH access to all the features and connections. Add a netduino with it's own MAC address, and you're an instant grey hat.

Well written, lots of tips and tricks, lots of code, and the few projects we tried were error free. RobotBASIC is not a tough language, and is a great place to start if you're transitioning from assembly (in this case SPIN) to an interpreted/ compiled high level language. If you combine the propeller with even a simple 555IC (available for $5 here on Amazon-- NE555P Timer IC), it is amazing what you can do with the help of this book and:

There are LOTS of other books on the propeller (keyword parallax propeller) on Amazon, many very good, but the above will give you a great start, and the present volume the "next step" in transitioning to basic-like programming. And, where else can you practice with EIGHT processors?!

Technical example: You've got a resting robot that encounters a power dip on an alarm circuit, and needs to reset the rest state or even an ongoing line following process with a recharge priority. In single process circuits or even arrays, most of us know how to use interrupt commands, even at the assembly level.

In multiprocessing, interrupts are a whole different animal, and in some cases can't even be used without a cascade involving memory allocation, heat and other unexpected issues. At some point, every designer or hobbyist is going to have to get into higher level code to even access and sim the i/o of these advanced, ram-sharing distributed multiprocessors! This IS the chance.

True compelling writhing

Presentation of technical content has never been more masterful. Compelling, insightful ideas and concepts developed in good order and leaving one with a sense of fullness and completeness. Left me feeling empowered to reach goals I never knew existed before. The small library of good Books I have read on the chosen Micro-Controller, it's programming and learning demonstrations exercises are a necessary precursor to this book and can be found in the on line library at[...]. They are the nuts and bolts of the matter, while this book propels you into a new frontier of exciting possibilities.
